Could it work out well for the Flames? Possibly. But it's very risky as Bennett could turn out to be an elite #1 center in this league. Remember all those years Iggy played without an elite center?
|
Stamkos is already elite. Bennett could turn out to be a run of the mill top 6 guy too.
Don't forget, we already have Monahan who is a #1C.

Whether it's 7 million or a even something more reasonable like 5 million, Hudler needs to get dealt IMO this season. He has blossomed later in his career, and should be trying to cash in on this next deal in both term and dollars. It's unfortunate, but this version of the Flames with Hudler isn't a true contender, and Hudler's age dictates that he won't be worth his dollars when the key pieces of this team do mature to be a contender.
To me this is so very straight forward, and obvious what the team needs to do. Very surprised many on here are so nervous about losing Hudler, versus excited to get some good return. Usually this place is all about moving on from our older guys, and as amazing Hudler has been, I think he's getting way too much credit for being the guy that stirs Johnny's and Monahan's drinks. And even if he was, those two are going to have to learn to be solid without him anyway if this team is going to become a top team, so why fight it?
As for the Bennett / Stamkos thing, I don't put much stock in it. But if Bennett was all that was required to land Stamkos with some confidence that he'd re-sign, I think the Flames would be very silly to not pull the trigger. Can you really pass up on that for Bennett's potential. I'd think we'd be blown away if Bennett becomes the player Stamkos actually is, and given he's only 25, what would we really be risking?

The uncomfortable has been dialled up to a rather uncomfortable '11.'

Is Monahan really better or going to be better than Stamkos? very little chance
Monahan has an amazing 53 goals in his first 2 seasons Stamkos is a different level-- 74 goals in his 1st 2 seasons. In his 2nd year he got put with Marty St.L and had 51 goals and 95 pts.... Gaudreau is similar to St. Louis.
If I was TB I would want Monahan over Bennett.
As far as cap goes Monahan is penciled in for 6x6. That means that it would be 4m more to sign stamkos That is the 4M that would be reasonable for Hudler to get.
I thinks that Gaudreau-Stamkos-Poirier/Klimchuck/Colborne >> Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler
Stamkos won't win a Lady Byng where Monahan is already a contender.

If you were BT, would you do, if offered, Stamkos for Monahan straight up?

The amount of people who are thinking about this situation while oblivious to the fact Stamkos is a UFA at the end of this season is quite astounding.

The amount of people worried about this without realizing that any trade would require a deal with Stamkos before hand, is quite astounding.

If a contract was agreed to in advance, Stamkos for Bennett could be great for both teams. It would be like being on the other side of the original Iginla trade. I wouldn't be happy to see the Flames add much, and I know Bolts wouldn't add to that.
Hudler will get $7M in Calgary like Gio got 9. it's a negotiation.
I'm OK with a Russel trade if the payback is crazy. As they said the Flames are one of the few teams with the depths to trade away a player like that.

I can believe this talk happened at the draft prior to the Hamilton deal. But I can't imagine it is still going on.
And I agree, he would free and sign in TO in the offseason. They would build the team around him and he could play to retirement.

First of all Spector is an idiot.
Second, this is great for Bennett's confidence start a stupid rumor about him on the chopping block. The guy is a complete moron and I wouldnt beleive anything he says.
Third - why on earth would you trade for Stamkos when he is a UFA at the end pf the year. Nothing stopping him from walking. People are honestly slow in the head.

It's not that far fetched with Babcock and Lamoriello running the team. When they unloaded Kessel they freed up a lot of money and can make him the highest paid player in the league if they choose. He's an Ontario boy and maybe that matters or maybe not but it can't hurt.

Bolts are probably STRESSING right now knowing they could lose a top 5 player in the league for very little (little in comparison).

Panic is what teams with no hope do. This team has a ton of potential and much to build on. Knuckle down, tough it out, fix the goalie situation and don't push the panic button and trade away the future.

He's pretty much the best GM in hockey IMO. I'm sure he'll come out of this situation looking great.

I would trade anyone on the Flames roster for Stamkos. He is only 25 years old, and theres not many guys in the league that can score like him.
Bennett+Hudler and a Pick would be the most I would trade as well. It would work well in Calgarys favour, but even at this I doubt Tampa would do it.
Hudler is up for free agency as well, and will be looking to get paid, which he definitely wont be getting in Calgary.
Bennett is a one of the Flames best young asset, however there is no chance he develops into a players like Stamkos.
Someone try this trade on NHL 2016 and let me know if it works.
