Apparently the Holocaust is Palestine's fault, not Hitler's.

Benjamin Netanyahu has placed the blame for the extermination of millions of Jewish people during World War II on the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, in a controversial speech.

"Hitler didn't want to exterminate the Jews at the time, he wanted to expel the Jews," Netanyahu said in the speech. "And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said, 'If you expel them, they'll all come here.'

Mr Netanyahu has made similar claims in the past, including during a Knesset speech in 2012, where he described Husseini - who visited Hitler and Himmler and supported their persecution of the Jews of Europe - as "one of the leading architects" of the final solution, Haaretz reported.

Others have detailed Husseini's influence on Hitler, yet the theory that Husseini was the one to initiate the mass murder of European Jews has been widely rejected.

Chancellor Merkel does not agree.

The German government said on Wednesday that responsibility for the Holocaust lay with the Germans, after Israel's prime minister sparked controversy before a visit to Berlin by saying a Muslim elder had convinced Adolf Hitler to exterminate Jews.

"All Germans know the history of the murderous race mania of the Nazis that led to the break with civilization that was the Holocaust," Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said when asked about Benjamin Netanyahu's remarks.

"This is taught in German schools for good reason, it must never be forgotten. And I see no reason to change our view of history in any way. We know that responsibility for this crime against humanity is German and very much our own."

Netanyahu was willing to whitewash Hitler to smear Palestinians. Just let that sink in to understand how low he has sunk.

The Holocaust and the events around it, plus the Nazi ideology were more complicated than what most of us our taught, but Netanyahu is clearly wrong about his conclusions even if some of the minor facts are technically correct.

German Nazis and their Nazi allies in other countries share the responsibility for this one. Many other people were indirectly responsible though.

Even if this was true, how does it have any more relevance to current Palestinians than it does to current Germans?

Is anyone of the opinion that any current German should have to carry the blame for the holocaust? If anything, the whole world should be looking at the holocaust as a lesson to avoid similar things in the future, and how horrific dehumanizing an entire culture can end up looking.

He wasn't absolving the Germans of it. However, he was also clearly overstating the Arab role in the holocaust. He's getting to be like Donald Trump these days, just saying whatever comes to his mind without thinking about it and then backtracking afterwards.

I don't think I've ever seen Netanyahu backtrack.

Seems to me he usually doubles down on something outrageous.

He's already backtracked on this.

Went from saying that Arabs put the idea in Hitler's head to saying the Mufti encouraged and helped Hitler.

He made similar clarifications during the election when he went from saying he would never allow a Palestinian state to the conditions weren't right for a Palestinian state now.

He's known for making over-dramatic (to the point of being false) statements and then "clarifying" them later on.
