All things considered, probably not a bad decision. I wish him all the best.

It's a bummer the way things ended abruptly but hard to feel overly sorry for him given his good fortune. I'm sure he will be able to have a comfortable life operating his ranch.

I dont know man. I've been working since I was 15 and I went through a 3 month period of 'unemployment' while I was setting up my own company at 28 years old and that was pretty rough.
I'm basically Peter Gibbons except I like scotch. I could literally do nothing if I had enough money and I doubt I'd ever tire of it.

NHL has gone the exact same way as the NBA. The stars make $10M and the rest are on entry level contracts. The mid level veterans either accept the league minimum or retire. This is part of the cap issue, but the biggest issue was the NHLPA getting salaries published so they could inflate free agent wages. The PA only cares about the star players which is why they fought so hard against the cap and agreed to do away with the open rookie contracts.

Shave about a million off his career earnings due to two way contracts early in his career.

You basically have to attribute value to each player and their contribution to the team and the effort and allocate that value to a percentage of the cap.

As I said before though, by my understanding that pension is basically crap.

With his retirement, I guess I can take my Glencross jersey out of retirement.

I remember being shocked at how actually bad it was.
Although I never looked into the pension plan for the new CBA, I'm sure it was renegotiated and its a union job, unions arent notorious for crap pensions.

Kind of bittersweet to see him retire this way. But he made a nice fortune and gets to retire being 1 year older then me. Best of luck to him.
You can bet agents around the league will be using him as an example to their clients as to why NOT to take a home town discount. Seems like the star players are highly paid and teams are trying to find a constant rotation of cheap, young contracts while the middle guys get cut out.
However it's hard to feel sorry for them though since pretty much everyone who followed the last lockout could see this coming a mile away. The NHLPA fought long and hard for this exact scenario all the while exclaiming that the pie was bigger. When in fact it just meant that a couple guys at the top got the biggest slice. It will be interesting to see in the future other players who will be forced into retirement, all the while still being able to play.
