As usual, brilliant piece by John Oliver.

I thought it would just be a passing mention, but it was the "main story" which, if you aren't familiar with the show, is about two thirds of the half hour.He made a couple cracks about Mulcair, spent a little more time jabbing at Justin's name, hair and fashion choices, how he's not as smart as his dad bla bla bla and then spent probably 10 minutes bashing on Harper. The message was definitely "don't vote for Harper".

I didn't even know that silly law existed. How did anyone ever think such a thing could be enforced? What are we gonna do, extradite the guy?

Yup, from the source. Some good laughable material, and 15 minutes!

That was gold, even the parts where he trashed Harper (who I voted for) had me laughing.

I do think it's a little annoying that he's trying to influence our election considering he doesn't live here, but at least it was funny. I just think he should have stopped before all the "don't vote for Harper" stuff.

Why? Americans should actually have some stake in this. Us Canadians care about what goes on there. As much as it would be a hilarious sideshow, I don't think any of us actually want to see Trump in the Whitehouse.

Outside of changing their policies right now I don't see a ton they could do to change my opinion. It certainly has a lot more to do with their policies overall than just a "low taxes=good" but getting support from the Fords is a way down the list of things that matter to me in this election especially considering how awful the other options are.

I don't see the Liberals or NDP as options for my vote. The Greens and CHP are a joke so I guess if Harper and other Conservatives went on a murder rampage maybe I wouldn't vote at all but yes I think it would take so sort of ridiculous situation like that for me to change my vote at this point.

I'm mostly excited because a Conservative friend of mine has been posting endless nonsense for the last few months and a liberal win will be so sweet.

I can't stand people so dedicated to a political ideology that they are insufferable people.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

I don't think it's a silly law. The purpose of the law isn't to stop Oliver or Joe Schmoe American from giving his opinion... it's to stop well-heeled foreign interest groups from spending obscene $$ on political influence.

Oh, how I miss the old Harper. I loved his minority government days

Quote:
Stephen Harper (2006-08)

Like Mr. Diefenbaker before him, Mr. Harper won a small minority in 2006 and sought to quickly implement his campaign promises while he could. With the support of the Bloc Québécois, the Conservatives passed the Federal Accountability Act, which introduced a new federal budget watchdog, put limits on lobbying and reduced the ceiling for campaign donations, and passed a first budget that cut taxes, including a point off the GST (and later another). The Conservatives also extended the Afghan mission five years with the votes of some Liberal MPs and recognized the Québécois as a “nation within a united Canada” with the support of all party leaders. Parliament was dissolved two years later and the Conservatives were re-elected with a larger minority.

This.

Yeah, it seems stupid when you put it in the context of charging John Oliver or any random American with an opinion. But it's a good law in the larger context.

John Oliver is not a particularly funny guy. He seems to frequently repeat the exact same jokes. Nonetheless, his show is interesting enough that the laughs he provides are worthwhile even though they're rarely big laughs.

It's hilarious that you think Americans give any kind of crap about Canada.

Oliver shouldn't be commenting on who we should vote for regardless of who he endorses and who he doesn't like. He didn't opine on the uk election or Scotland referendum, I wonder why he felt the need to bash one of our candidates.

I dunno, maybe because US and Canada share longest international border? And along with that the largest trade agreement in the world between the two countries?

I think his writers do a bang up job on assessing issues and presenting them in a pretty accessible way; but his delivery and the jokes end up being pretty formulaic after you've seen a few episodes. You can spot his jokes coming a mile away.
