Icon33 Canadiens sign Plekanec to 2 yr $12 million extension

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Tomas Plekanec's 2-yr extension with MTL has AAV of $6M -- $7M in first yr and $5M in second yr.

That's an interesting deal, particularly the term. Maybe gms are getting wise to giving out long term contracts to players in their 30s. Also sets a precedent for Hudler I'd say.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Plekanec deal does NOT include a no-trade or a no-move, so straight up deal

Plekanec definitely wants to stay in Montreal. I have no idea what AAV he might have got as a UFA, but he would have got some more term.

That might be a decent ballpark contract for Hudler.

Since the lockout Hudler has 157 pts in 195 games
Plekanec has 136 in 210.

Plek is almost 2 years older as well.

Under this scenario, Hudler at 13/2 or 20/3 is more plausible?

Why would he agree to such a short term?

Good deal. Probably one of the more underrated players in the league IMO.

I can see them winning a Cup sometime in the next couple of years.

Plekanec is a much better defensive player than Hudler.

Still might not be a bad comparison. I can certainly see Hudler getting in that $5-6 million range on a short term deal.

But Plekanec is a very well rounded player and some of that salary accounts for that.

He believes the Habs have a real chance to win the Cup in the next 3 years?

That would be so insufferable, I really hope that doesn't happen.

Plekanec isn't a terrible player. My bet is he is also a big contributor to the locker room and overall team culture...again much like Hudler.

On ice performance is always going to be top priority, but being a character guy behind the scenes would be a close second. Having both I think will up your value in any GM's eyes...at least the good ones.

The Flames found their success last year in having a good balance of heart, camaraderie, and skill. Just look at the team up the street...full of skill....but lacking in other areas.

Montreal made a good move..and I hope the Flames will venture in keeping Huds.

He doesn't have the leverage. If he wanted more term he would have to drop salary demands. And the lack of money available for the 2015 UFA class probably scared the 2016 UFAs. They can't assume pay days on July 1st anymore

John Shannon also points out this deal expires the same time as Carey Price's current contract, giving the Habs more flexibility in re-signing Price.

Plekanec plays the toughest minutes the Habs have. He has scored 20+ goals (prorated for lockout year) 8 of the last nine years.
Definitely not a terrible player.
