Jiri Hudler Contract Extension???
So our RW Jiri Hudler is in the last year of a 4 year deal @ $4 mil per. Given how strong the chemistry is between himself, Monahan and Johnny Hockey and the fact that Hudler is still in producing points, should we resign him? He is going to turn 32 in January and isn't the fastest skater in the world but doesn't have a ton of NHL games on his body.
When it comes to a cup champion like Hudler your paying for more than just goals and points. Leadership, experience, chemistry and character are all part of the picture.
Given the above I would be comfortable offering a 3 year deal at an AAV of maybe $5 mil. He may or may not get more on the open market but the risk appears to transferring to some of the veterans like Glencross who are still NHL quality players but may have passed on the chance to secure a contract with a few teams.
I am a big Jiri fan personally and don't think its easy to replace him in the UFA market or via internal players. I don't think we can UPGRADE the above arguments but we may be able to get potentially higher production in the coming years.

I wouldn't mind to see him signed for a short term deal like 2-3 years but he will certainly want term for this era in his career. I wouldn't be surprised if both sides go in a different direction

Is this seriously his 4th season with us?
Time is moving at an alarming pace.

I realistically don't think this will work out based on the term he is going to want to see on his next contract.. which is sad to say because he's been absolutely crucial to our quick rebuild and I think he can continue to put up elite scoring for the next 2-3 seasons.

I do wonder if Hudler wants to take a discount. Talk about being a team with lots of upside, also he has said that he wants to be a Flame until retirement.

If the numbers fit make it happen. Flames likely need to pay both Monahan and Gaudreau $6-$7M per starting next season. Bennett may or may not be in line for that raise a year later and the Flames are paying Gio big bucks late into his career.
$5M per for 3 years is a dream but you have to think Jiri wants more

Would be tough to lose this guy.. If Tre can make it happen without super long term, I'm in.

You would think that he wants term to get a little bit of security. I think he would want 5 years +, and there is no way BT gives him a big payday for that term.
I agree that 3 years at 5 million would be great.

It is not going to be easy re-signing him based on the team's current cap situation so you have to hope his demands will be on the low side.
I think the guy is very important to this team. The Flames have a lethal top line which IMO is the single biggest strength of the forward group by a mile. Need to move some of the money being spent on the defense to make it happen.

Don't see anything wrong with 3 years at 5 Mil... Nobody else at this time is close to being able to replace what he brings

Yeah I think 3 years is about all I'd be comfortable with. Love to have him back, hope he's not looking for a home run. Couldn't blame him if he did, I just hope he doesn't.

If Huds truly want to be a part of the good years ahead, I think he'll be more then willing to take a discount. But things will get awfully tight if its for more then 4 years and 5mil+.
So do you trade a guy like him at the deadline if he's producing at a high rate if Treliving knows he won't re-sign? Or do you ride him into the playoffs and hope you can make a run with him as a top line winger? Tough decision for management.
And it's a damn shame he got slashed by Regehr in the last LA game last season because he looked like he was playing injured all playoffs. I'd like to see what he can do when he's 100% healthy in the playoffs. But at the same time injuries can happen at a moments notice and I'd view it as a mistake if we kept him for a run and he somehow got injured again and was rendered ineffective.
Of all the players on the team, Hudler is the one I'm most torn about when it comes to extending, as surely he'd fetch a king's ransom come deadline time.

I'm in the group that would like to see him back if the numbers make sense but at the same time I'm a bit skeptical that they will. It will be interesting to see how things play out. I think the situation the team finds itself in later in the year will likely determine how they approach things.

I'd hope they at least explore what they could get in trade if they know he won't re-sign and the team doesn't look like they have a legitimate shot to go deep in the playoffs. The West is so stacked if were losing a guy like Hudler I think its pretty important we get some quality assets back if we can.

What do you guys reckon we'd want/be able to get for him if we were to trade him at the deadline? We'd almost certainly need an established forward to come back our way as losing Hudler would leave a massive hole in the top 6. But what gm would trade us a top 6 winger equal or greater than Hudler with some term left on their contract? We'd have to add to upgrade on him, and it would probably have to be at least our second or more likely our first, otherwise we'd just be shooting ourselves in the foot come playoff time. I think we'd have to do something like the Johnson+1st for Carter trade (although I don't know if Johnson was a pending Ufa at the time).
Trading him for futures would be like giving up on going anywhere in the playoffs.

3 years $16 million is what I'd do. Fair deal to both sides as I think he can get more as a UFA. He does nothing but produce points while playing above average defence.

Hudler has earned and deserves a raise.
