I imagine they liked him but felt they didn't have room for another small forward in their top 6. I would have been fine if they took him over Klimchuk but I don't worry about size nearly as much as Burke and Treliving.

Resurrection's assessment is really premature by comparing Petan to Gaudreau. In what I have seen, there is little comparison outside of being small and quick. Guardian is on another level entirely.
|
I'm simply drawing a comparison. Petan is a quick, small, dangles and has natural offensive flair. Don't need to get defensive over Gaudreau, I'm not suggesting petan is or will be better

"Better"??? If Petan ends up being even half as good as Gaudreau then I would say that Jets fans should count that as a tremendous success.
If I am defensive it is because this isn't the first time a Jets fan has made this comparison, and it strikes me as little more than wishful thinking. Yes, Petan is small, and yes, he possesses good hands and speed. But how many small, skilled players with gaudy juniour numbers have played in the NHL? How many have played and succeeded like Gaudreau?
It's a nauseating homerish-Jets-fans thing to do.

At this point I don't even think you're reading what I'm writing.

Sure I am. I just wonder why you would compare Petan to Gaudreau and not Paul Byron, Jordan Schroeder, Nathan Gerbe, Cam Atkinson, or any one of the other dozens of small skilled players who have played or do play in the NHL?

Oh, excellent, you're doubling down instead of simply admitting you read the word better and instantly flipped over your computer desk and angrily cracked away at your keyboard before realizing the context of the word.

Probably for the same reasons we compared Gaudreau to Kane in the time leading up to his NHL debut.
Nobody was suggesting at that time that he was as good or better than Kane... just that their stature was similar, as was their playmaking/stickhandling ability.

For the same reason CPers compare Gaudreau to Kane... It's always nice to dream that your player is going to turn into something better.

The Gaudreau→Kane comparisons couldn't have had anything to do with the fact that he smashed decades-old league records in his last college season, could it have? Or that he ended up tied among all NHL rookies in scoring? Or that he is presently leading his NHL team in scoring in his second season?
I don't know—there seems to be a fair difference between comparing an already elite player to another elite player and then making the same comparison to a guy who had a good juniour career and a relatively solid NHL start.

Text... you compared Gaudreau to Kane in October 2013, prior to his Hobey Baker winning NCAA season.
http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpos...4&postcount=93
And grouped him with Crosby, Malkin, Kane, and Kovalchuk, after only his 1st NHL game.
http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpos...&postcount=499
Nobody jumped down your throat for those posts. It's awfully hypocritical of you to get this upset over Resurrection simply comparing Petan's game to Gaudreau's. He even followed it up with "I'm not suggesting petan is or will be better", and you won't pull back.

Why is it hypocritical? Were my comparisons off the mark, or were my expectations implausible?
What about Petan's game is comparable to Gaudreau? I personally feel that it is an unabashedly unrealistic comparison.

How can you say something like this before even having the most remote idea of how Mangiapane will turn out? Seems really weird to me.

Because Mangiapane is going to be more like Toews than Gaudreau is.
