Fib fractures come in all shapes and sizes. It is absolutely possible to sustain one and not have it hurt much (tiny avulsions or a high fib or incomplete oblique types). If it needs to go to surgery, I would have my money on Bouma's injury not being one of these types.

To further cloud the issue, it is also possible to have a non-displaced fracture with a blown syndesmosis. These are rare and usually involve an undiagnosed fracture elsewhere (tib plafond).

Sandbox 2.0, I would be OK with that.

Thats actually a good comparison except I think Bouma has the ability to chip in more offence.

Can of a reversal for each player eh?

Yelle was a producer in junior, goals/assists, over 100 pts in his best year.

Bouma was not a producer in junior, 40ish pts in his best year.

There is also a tough fibrous band of connective tissue that connects the fibula to the tibia along the length of the bone to keep it from displacing. Long term, an undiagnosed fracture would eventually displace, but over a short period of time without major ligament tearing, the bone doesn't have enough pressure on it to displace. Often they heal without incident and very few chronic symptoms.

On the other hand, a high ankle sprain can be one of the worst injuries to have when it comes to stability of the ankle joint. That tough fibrous band of connective tissue tears and you now have an unstable ankle joint, and are at high risk for re-injuring the joint in the future. That's why they say it's better if the bone breaks than having a high ankle sprain.

Thus endeth the lesson.
And that's what was hurt the most, and took forever to heal, the high ankle sprain part of the deal. It is still not 100% years later. Just the slightest mistep and it swells up for a couple weeks. I was very lucky that's all that happened after having a 450 lb motorcycle pin my leg at 60 KPH. If I was wearing proper boots that day, I would have just gotten away with a bit of road rash.

Unfortunate turn of events for the team. Lance Bouma is an important piece of the team's young core.

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
Lance Bouma had surgery on broken fibula yesterday. A plate and six screws used to mend calf bone. #Flames winger out approx. three months.

So now Bouma actually has metal parts in his body, it's not a joke anymore.

I'm going to give this one a guarded "yay!" (obviously, within the context of this unfortunate injury). This is, of course, just a guess given the limited info.

A significant prognostic factor is whether or not the syndesmosis (the big ligament between the tib and fib that Cali was talking about) was damaged. 6 screws does not make it sound like it was damaged. Generally, when placing a plate, you would use 1 (sometimes 2) as an "interfrag" screw, leaving 4-5 to secure the plate. You almost never use just 3 and rarely just 4 to put a plate on, which may indicate that they did NOT have to use an extra big screw to bolt the tib and fib together (to stabilize the syndesmosis).

This is assuming that it's one of the common fracture configurations. I Lance's chances for a better recovery if the syndesmosis wasnt injured.

One stern glare at the security person with those piercing eyes and default scowl, and he'll pass through with flying colors my friend.

He also got a plate and eight screws in his finger this past spring. Give it till the end of his contract and the conversion will probably be complete.

Where is that old (really, really old) image of Daymond Langkow where he was semi-terminator?

We should adapt that to Bouma!

Do you think one of these days Bouma might actually start getting hesitant to block shots if his body becomes all metal?
