Me too!
In my case I broke both after jumping off a 30 foot bridge - I managed to finish the marathon I was running and then went to my football game that night. I thought something was funny when it was still hurting in the morning.
Jogged over to hospital and was flabbergasted when the x-rays came back

I am currently in my 5th week of recovery from this same (Bouma) injury. It is not fun, for sure, but it also seems to be better to have a clean break than any other ligament/tendon damage--they say bone heals to 100% so long as you give it time and don't weight bear. And I also got the '3-month' timeline for a return to my athletics...that's hard to hear, at first.
And mostly, crutches suck.

Agree that he needed better linemates, but he hasn't been very good himself to start the season, especially with his positional play in his own zone.

He's not alone in that, but it's hard when you are really some out there just trying to cover everything

That's because the fibula is a non-weight bearing bone. You can often put your full weight on a fracture and still move around, but it is a bone where many ligaments and muscles attach, and is half of the ankle mortis joint. There is also a tough fibrous band of connective tissue that connects the fibula to the tibia along the length of the bone to keep it from displacing. Long term, an undiagnosed fracture would eventually displace, but over a short period of time without major ligament tearing, the bone doesn't have enough pressure on it to displace. Often they heal without incident and very few chronic symptoms.
On the other hand, a high ankle sprain can be one of the worst injuries to have when it comes to stability of the ankle joint. That tough fibrous band of connective tissue tears and you now have an unstable ankle joint, and are at high risk for re-injuring the joint in the future. That's why they say it's better if the bone breaks than having a high ankle sprain.
Thus endeth the lesson.

I like Bouma, he's a fan favorite but also a dime a dozen player. We're not better with him, and not worse without him.

I disagree, and even if he was he brings something to this team that was sorely missed during the playoffs.

Disagree. He brought energy, scoring and defensively responsible play last year. They need all that.

Given the available information, this cannot be assumed.
Most mechanisms of fib fracture automatically come with ligamentous injury (refer to Lauge-Hansen classification... may not have spelled it right?). The only fibula fx's I've seen without ligamentous injury are the high-energy direct smack to the side of the leg types. Any other twisty, jammy mechanisms can be assumed to have lateral ligament damage. It's just not directly addressed because you're in a boot for a while anyways.

There are plenty of fracture configurations that blow the syndesmosis. It's the reason why we use syndesmotic screws or a tightrope in an ORIF.

I was talking about non-displaced fractures, but sure, if you displace the bone enough the syndesmosis will tear.
The fact that they're doing surgery means there was probably some displacement, so it's possible he had a syndesmotic tear as well. That's probably why his recovery time is 3 months and not 6-8 weeks.
I was speaking to the scenarios the other posters had presented.

Yup. It is easy to envision someone like Poirier can replace Bouma's offence. But he won't replace the shot blocking, the penalty killing, the balls-to-the-wall reckless physicality.
That is where Bouma's loss will hurt us.

Hmm...
Yup, looking at it a second time it sure seems that way. My bad.
In my defense, I've heard of people walking around on fibular fractures before and not seeking treatment for 2-3 days.
