The 2nd round pick was nice, but the fact it turned into Andersson is nothing short of brilliant. This kid is a surefire top-4 NHL d-man.
Wonder if Benning has learnt that you can't set a players value based on what he did 3 years ago in Junior.

Coaching staff in Vancouver appears to agree that Baertschi isn't getting it done. Outside of the 4 point effort against the Oilers (which was largely due to strong play from Virtanen/Horvat) he wasn't very good in preseason either.
Kid needs to figure it out or else he will be ending up on waivers in the next couple weeks.
|
It's the same story. He looks dangerous in the offensive zone at times but won't do the grunt work to get pucks and he still won't play with commitment in his own zone.
This is a guy that only wants to be on highlight reels and it shows in his game. Unless you are scoring like a mofo, not too many coaches will tolerate that kind of play for very long.

That move had Weisbrod written all over it from the second the trade was made. I'm pretty sure Benning even mentioned he wasn't that familiar with him.
"Trust me Jim this kid will be a bonafide top 6 FWD. Burke and Hartley have just ruined him through their own petty grudges against the kid. Give up whatever they want for him."

They also had one of his former junior coaches as their head coach in Utica who vouched for him.

While that is a hilarious hypothetical, this is the meathead Benning quote I was talking about :

Quote:
Yeah I was surprised, but for whatever reason sometimes players need a change of scenery, I think Sven is sort of at that point. A couple years ago scouting all through North America, I thought Sven was the best junior in the country. He was a dynamic player and he played on some real good teams, he played for Mike Johnston who likes to play a fast style of game, and he was excellent. I can't comment on his development the last couple of years, but we're very excited to have him, we think he fits our profile of being a fast, talented, skilled player so I think he's going to fit in good with our young players going forward.

It's kind of sad to see his progression (if you'd even call it that) since he's been drafted. Looked like such a dynamic offensive player in junior and was one of the more exciting prospects we'd had in quite some time since there was such a dearth of offensive prospects in the system at that time. Today he looks like a player that just hasn't taken much of a step in the past 4 years or so. And there's no indication he'll be taking a big step any time soon.
Looking back, his emergency recall in 2012 might have hurt him more than anything. He scored 3 goals in 5 games and expectations for him after that were sky high, and obviously too much for him to handle. Maybe he just wasn't that good or maybe the pressure got to him, but he never came close to the player he could have. It's really unbelievable looking back that the 5 game emergency recall stint could end up being the hilight of his entire NHL career. That's crazy, and sad.

Yeah that works; the Sedins are retiring in the next little while, so there's a clear need to come up with a new sexist nickname for a Vancouver hockey player for when they're gone. Nailed it.

I think he started believing his own hype after those five games. Decided he was good enough to play in the NHL and never put in much work after that.

I thought that too before, but what I think now is different. I think that during the call-up Sven thought scoring the NHL will be as easy as junior, so there's no need to change anything about his game or the way he prepares. He clung to the idea that all he had to do was keep doing the same thing and the goals will come instead of listening to Bob and Brad and the like.
When points didn't come, he blamed everyone but himself. Now the same story is being played out in VAN and he'll soon find himself playing 0:00 minutes a game in the NHL. Hell, I bet a guy like that struggles in the Swiss top flight.

Holy crap people are so overly sensitive these days they take Swiss Miss as sexist?!
It means miss; as in he did not reach the target. He missed the target/goal.
Sven's whole career path has been a "miss".
Calm down there PC Principal.

I took the word 'miss' to mean the opposite of the word 'hit', but maybe I'm crazy.

Oh, okay. My mistake. I hear that and immediately think of Martina Hingis.
And yeah, it's a bit of a PC thing but it's pretty obvious that there's an overall problem in hockey about being exclusionary to women. The sisters thing, "Cindy Crosby", et certera. That sort of garbage stopping can only be a positive thing. Given how common that "haha you play like a girl" type of chirping is, I think I can be forgiven for jumping to a conclusion there...

While your short fuse was hilarious on the word Miss....As a father of two hockey girls and a male coach of females, I can say there are quite a few Pee Wee boys that should take the bolded as a compliment.
But yeah....some work to do on your point....we are getting there however.

Swiss Miss is hot chocolate. Tepid and marshmallowy. The only one bringing up inequality and sexism is you.

What I find the most perplexing thing in regards to Sven is his lack of commitment. I still remember the stories that came out post draft about Sven staying on the ice after practice to work on things, or even after games. I remember Flames' management praising him for how difficult he was to find a few times at the hotel room - apparently while his other teammates were busy playing video games, Baertschi would be riding the bike.
I thought for sure this kid was a "can't miss" future NHL'er just based on his work ethic alone, regardless of talent. It has just been very ironic seeing him on the ice being the laziest player in Calgary for the last two season's worth of call-ups, and even more perplexing seeing the same thing happening in Vancouver. Just seems to have very little urgency in his game except on the PP. I don't even usually see it in the offensive zone 5v5.
It really is too bad - he had such a fantastic tool set. Good IQ as well. Just not much in the way of commitment and character - and those were two things that were considered huge strengths in his draft year.
Time is quickly running out for him. He has this season to start being a regular NHL'er, before he starts to bounce around from team to team on waivers, until finally he ends up heading back to Europe. I thought at least he would be skating hard and playing hard on the Canucks this year. Figured his agent or someone would have told him he needs to show more. Just isn't doing it. Makes you think he never will.

Agreed. How did previous management let it get so far out of hand?
Just goes to show, there is a LOT more to prospects than just developing talent.
