Giving up goals in the last minute of a period is a trend we need to reverse. It had to be a huge deflater going into the dressing room down 2 goals when it should have been just one.

Bennett looked really good again. Didn't get an assist on the first goal but made a great pass up the ice. He's getting his confidence.
Thought the team played well and pushed hard. Nothing like the dominations from the Blues in the past, despite the shot clock.

What the Flames need to do to adjust in the second period is to play like the Calgary Flames used to play years ago. Rather than jumping out to the far blueline, they need to go up as a five man unit. The problem is that most of the Flames defence are slower than average skater's, so the Flames need to establish themselves in the offense of zone for them to be able to change. If they can't change then there are stuck out there for a very long time and that's where mistakes happen and pucks go in the Flames net.
The forwards need to hang back, sort of like how the St. Louis Blues trapped the Flames in the third period. they need to be a counterpuncher type team instead of a run and gun team in the second period.

Coles notes:
- Wouldve been nice to get the win but its still the best we've played against blues in a while.
- Gaudreau is gonna be ppg this year.
- Defensively Gio is almost back but offensively sonething doesnt seem right.
- We need to keep Kulak in when Brodie gets back (Engelland #7).
- I Dont know whats wrong with Backlund, maybe he is deflated because of getting demoted because of a 19 year old that is already better then he is.
- Hiller wasnt great but the score/outcome reflected the shot differential so thats that i guess.
- lots of the players are starting to gel and Bennet and Ferland seem to be flying right now so they will probably start to get some points pretty soon
- if they can put together 60 minute efforts they are gonna be real good.... hopefully they can figure that part out sooner then later.
- Hopefully Boumas makes a speedy recovery, he was starting to show up in this game.
Closing thoughts: I was really interested to see how we would play against the Blues but Im still not sure what to make of it. Just as interested to see the game on Friday against Winnipeg.

So basically the coaches cliche on how his goali played. Hiller didn't play awful but Ortio needs playing time. He won't progress without it.

Not liking Hamiltons play at all so far, even Gio seems off but I'll cross my fingers and chalk that up to new season rust with a new partner. I really am not a fan of how much Hamilton jumps into the play. I know Brodie does it a lot but either Brodie is better at it or picks his spots better cause he looked far more effective at it last year than Hamilton does so far.
Not too worried about the loss. Blues are a good team and it's still early. Hoping the 2nd line continues to play like it did in the third but man, Ferland looks like Regular season Ferland again. Hope thats just rust too.

Hiller faced 28 shots, let in 4, two of which were of the extremely soft variety. Doesn't deserve the next start. I want Ortio.

I would love to see Hartley sit Backlund down for a game just like they did with Wideman (always earned) early in the year as well as Ferland just for a learning opportunity like Johnny had early last year as well. Let them both sit against Winnipeg and then unleash a motivated Ferland in beast mode on the Saturday night Conner McDavid show.

I think it's becoming more obvious that Gio-Brodie is a special pairing, and even though it isn't even a slight against Hamilton, having a substitute in there just doesn't compliment Gio in the same way. Need to reunite the two and get Hammy on a second pairing, perhaps with Russell, who is typically more defensively aware. Or they can roll all three pairings more or less and just put him down with Kulak.

Ferlands been better than bollig and Bouma (two closest comparables). Hes been moved through the lines more than anyone else. Once he finds a home he will start to put up some points and throw the body around a bit more.

I like the benching Ferland idea. He needs some fire.

Pull Backlund in favour of Granlund and let Jooris draw in if Bouma's sidelined?

On the bright side, I'll be shocked if Gaudreau doesn't match what he does last season so I'm breathing easier on the sophomore slump threat, even though I didn't really believe it would happen to him any ways.
He seems even better than last year. If this team is at least as good as last year he could be PPG no problem. Even if that puts him in the top 5 in the NHL. He's unreal.
