Man that Golf R is one of my favourite cars right now. The 'sleeper' factor is off the charts (I love that). Agreed the STI needs the hatch, but the 'look-at-me' factor is a bit too high for my tastes with those.

Yeah the Golf R has a really nice styling balance. It's tweaked just enough so that you can tell it's not a regular Golf/GTI, but still feels restrained enough that you don't look like a cheese-eating high school boy.
In general though, I love the look of the new Golf lineup. If I never needed a daily driver, it would probably be it.

One of the reasons for preferring the hatch. Bit less of that than with the fast & furious spoiler.

It's at the bottom of my list for now, but I'll definitely be going for something in the "hot hatch" department for my next one in a couple years.

Aww yeah. Back when I had the Dynasty, my sister was dating my roommate so she was at my place all the time, and she had this crappy Pontiac Acadian, RWD 5 speed. I used to trade cars with her all the time. She thought I was crazy because the Dynasty was a nice looking car, and the Acadian was kind of a POS... But so much fun to drive.

Save 8 grand, buy a GTI with a performance pack, get an APR tune, and laugh at the golf R in your rear view mirror. Plus you can get that sweet, sweet Jacky plaid interior. But...but AWD!! The performance pack gets you a full locking mechanical diff, and adaptive suspension. So traction and torque steer are non-factors.

Mine will be here mid-Dec. Silver, 6 spd, 2 door, every option but leather. Just like a GTI was meant to be.

If it was my money, I'd probably go GTI as well (AWD is nice, but not imperative for me). I wish they had a few more color choices though...how cool would it be if you could get paint to sample GTIs.

That and VW needs to start doing Euro Delivery! That would probably be the most enticing reason for me to buy a new car.

I love that you can still get nice cloth in a Golf. The quality of leather tends to be pretty ####ty these days in a lot of cars (and don't even get me started on alcantera), to the point where I'd much rather just have nice cloth.

Nice cloth is where it's at and I love the VW plaid. Not hot in the summer, not cold in the winter.

Only crappy thing about cloth is that it's not dog or kid friendly.

No. Didn't even realize that was an option. Are you talking about the back seat, or the rear window of the car?

Edit: Either way the answer is no. I don't think the thing even had power steering, let alone power windows.
