If you could trade some deadweight off this team you could fit that in. How insane would that defence be?
Adding Chara would make you a win now team.

Our two vet goalies + ($8.3M on one year contracts) for Rask ($7M for six years). This would give us our #1 goalie with Ortio learning the ropes.
Krejci and Bergeron are great players but at their price, I don't think they currently fill a need. It looks like Chara is now damaged goods so I wouldn't take him either.

I could actually see the Sabres showing some interest. Lots of cap space, weak on defence, and they want to be more competitive now. Chara offers a big leadership and toughness upgrade to a young team like the Sabres.

I love Wideman's game - more than most on the Board.
But if we moved Wideman and brought in Chara for our 2nd. pairing, i'm all for that.
It would likely mean we have to move Engellend's contract as well, but sign me up.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I might consider moving Russell before wideman at this point.

I think that's crazy, personally. But with Wideman being given an A, it wouldn't surprise me if management thought the same as you.

Russell has a permanent A and Wideman shares his with Monahan.

I think our prospect pool can replace Russell easier than Wideman. I wouldn't have said that a year ago, but I think we have guys able to step in now. I would like to see both guys traded by the start of next season. I like them both, but they are the type of guys that add decent picks and can be replaced by our prospects.

#1 Goaltender

Does Tuuka Rask make the Flames legit contenders this season? If so, I think you have to explore the option. The elite goaltenders in the league all make similar money and none of the rest of them appear to be on the market at all.
What would it cost in assets now, and who would the Flames not be able to resign in the near future to make it happen?

I wonder at what point the Bruins contingency plan includes firing Don Sweeney, who is looking like even more of a disaster than the harshest critics of his hiring might have projected.

I've always liked Rask, but his cap hit is atrocious. Its higher than Price.

It's in line with the other elite goalies. Sure, price is half a million cheaper, but I'm pretty sure Montreal isn't looking to move him.

I would agree with you except for
A) Russell is ufa as of july1 so you have to trade hime by the deadline this year.
B) i think the window to trade Wideman was this past summer. You could still trade him but his stock will never be higher and you wont get much for him at his age he would be a rental for another team.

Maybe, but it's not good salary structure. He's higher-paid than any of the last seven cup-winning goaltenders, even after accounting for cap inflation. Maybe more, I didn't feel like digging that far back.

Its a big commitment considering our #1 of the future could be ortio or gillies. Both of whome could be ready for the opportunity next year

I'm not sure Boston would go completely brain dead for us a second time. The only way I see a move for Rask from our side is that Ortio and one of Ramo/Hiller goes with him + we take on really bad contracts and/or add a lot to balance it out. They need a reasonable goalie to go forward too.
IMO Hiller and Ramo for Rask is like discussing Cammy for Drouin.

A top tier goalie will cost more then 5 mill. Rask is a top 5. So 7 mill will be fine, considering we have more then 8 allocated to Hiller and Ramo right now.
Gillies would have be part of the package going the other way but I'd be fine with that.
