Bad contract or not, Mike was in the wrong. Not the Kings fault they got lucky. Any team would have done the same IMO

You would have to think that any remaining payment would likely have to be treated like a buyout.

From the article:

f a settlement is reached, there's no word yet on what salary cap penalties the Kings would still face. There's bound to be something, but not likely as onerous as the full value of Richards' contract, which carries with it a cap hit of $5.75 million. If there's a settlement, Richards would undoubtedly become a free agent though there's no telling at this point what monies he would be entitled to from the Kings in a settlement.

Can't imagine teams will be thrilled if Richards settlement has #LAKings on hook for less than buyout terms, which incl. cap hit until 2025.

Frank Seravalli ‏@frank_seravalli
Regular buyout of Richards' deal incl cap hit of $4.2M in 2018-20. Many teams believed #LAKings wrongly terminated deal for temp cap relief.

No facts in the piece, McKenzie says that they're (Richards + Kings) working out a settlement and that he believes there would have to be some cap ramifications (although not the full value of the deal).

I honestly don't see what they can do here that'll get them off cap-free. Honestly I think the only resolution that the NHL & NHLPA could fairly agree to would be to have the Kings drop the termination on the condition that the NHL give them a special buyout window to allow them to buy out the contract.

Well no kidding. The think has been a scam from the start and I can't believe they have made it this far. I'm hoping they can't come to an agreement and have to go to an arbitrator as I believe the Kings would lose the case and be on the hook for the entire deal as they should be.

Wow the kings are a greasy organization. Drug scandals with their players and management/ownership that can spell integrity about as well as Bobby Ryan can spell intensity.

Interesting point made by Dreger. He said on TSN that some believe this situation might be holding up the Kopitar contract extension talks.

If true, that likely gives Richards some power in the negotiations.

Since when to players under contract in any sport do you get fired for it? Heck even in the real world very few employers would have the stones to fire an employee for a drug or alcohol problem.

The addict needs to take some responsibility for their situation or they'll never recover.

Well yeah but what exactly is your point in relation to the Kings trying to use that to get out of a bad contract?
