I don't see the rational why all six d-men need to be on the rush. I liked Smid for the edge that he showed defending the crease. Engelland shows the same and he is hands down one of the best scrappers in the league. Can't forget his pugilistic abilities ala holding off two nucks being coached by the referee in the playoffs.

Based on how Engelland played down the stretch and the playoffs. I would have no problem with him being the 6th D actually i expect he will.

			Should be a third option.
If you make me choose it's Engelland, but it's like asking if I want nails or pubes on my sandwich.

In all seriousness Engelland has become a character player in the line up and locker room. I would replace him if I could, but I appreciate what he is.

I can't recall ever liking Smid for a moment when he was on this team or his previous squad.

We haven't seen Smid play in god knows how long, so it's kind of a hard question to answer.
 As of right now Engelland.

Why break up things that work? Put Brodie back to natural left shot

 Gio-Hamilton
 Russell-Wideman
 Brodie-Engelland

Engelland just had a solid playoff run where he stepped-up big time.
Smid isn't quite back from a long term injury. He looked pretty bad before he got injured too. I know people don't like Engelland, but I can't believe this is even in question.

Well, because he plays on the right side, isn't a bottom pairing defenseman in the NHL, and should be playing more than 15 minutes a night. It'll be an atrocity if Wideman-Russell isn't broken up when Brodie is back. TJ deserves priority and is arguably the best D-Man on the team not named Giordano.

I think defensive ability wise, they're similar. However, Engelland has that extra double face punching dimension. So Engo gets the vote from me until enforcers die out for good.

I think comments about which player is better in the locker room should be limited to posters who spend significant time in the locker room with the players (hint: none of us).
My vote would also be "c. None of the above".

When Brodie comes back, I hope Kulak plays with him in the second pairing, but I know it won't happen. I'll have to watch paint dry instead (Engelland trying to make a decision on which outlet pass to make - and ultimately cough up the puck).

I have been reading your posts this past week or so, and can't help but think that you might be happier cheering for another team.

No. Born and raised Calgarian. Season ticketholder since 1998 (when the rest of the City nearly gave up on them). The only other teams I can cheer for are the ones playing against the Canucks on a given night.

I think the Flames have a legitimate shot at being a Stanley Cup contender in the next few years. I just believe that management needs to accept that we're not quite there yet, which means identifying players that are not contibuting to winning hockey games. The Flames need to ice the best team possible, hence Bollig (and Engelland, but that's a different thread) should be in the pressbox. We had to put a real contributor in Byron on waivers and lost him because of this organization's romantic ideas of truculence.

Being a Flames fan doesn't mean supporting every player unconditionally. If you look back, you'll see that there have been some real stinkers (even you must surely admit Gary Leeman was sub-par). I know it's hard to believe, but there could be one or two players on the current roster that we might look back on some day and say "we could have done without those guys". I just happen to believe Bollig and Engelland are likely to be two of them.

If you think our lineup is perfect, then great. Those 28-1 Vegas odds must look pretty enticing!

Engelland all day, every day and twice on Sundays, but it isnt fair because 'Healthy Smid' needs to get some games under his belt.

Wait...you had to go back to Gary Leeman to find an example of a player that wasn't "up to par"?

*suggests breaking up the best D pairing in the league*

Engelland. I like him and I'm guessing management and the coaching staff like him too, there's probably a lot more to it that most don't see but I'm sure there's a reason he's on the team and starting.
I hope Smid the best but the only way I want to see him on the ice during a Flames game is if he's wearing a different jersey. He wasn't good enough pre injury, I don't see how he's a fit on this team.
