Default Smid or Engelland?

Smid says he's very close, and maybe he really is considering they haven't called up a D from Stockton. Who should be our #6D?

The potential options I see are:

Gio-Hamilton
Russell-Wideman
Smid-Kulak

Gio-Hamilton
Russell-Wideman
Kulak-Engelland

Or of course, Smid-Engelland as the bottom pairing again. That was a nightmare. And once Brodie returns:

Gio-Brodie
Russell-Hamilton
Smid-Wideman

Gio-Hamilton
Brodie-Wideman
Russell-Engelland

Gio-Brodie
Russell-Hamilton
Kulak-Wideman

Engelland if I have to choose, but honestly, in a perfect world my answer is neither.

EDIT: Only because I like mobility in Dmen, and we have younger better options on the way. But for now, Engelland for sure IMO.

This would be my response as well.

having 6.5 tied up in those two for the next two seasons is not good.

Being that Smid should probably never step on the ice again purely for his own health reasons, I pick Engelland.

It sucks, but Smid probably won't finish this season and will likely retire.

I like the option of dumping both and going with a combination of Kulak, Morrison, Sieloff or Culkin to compliment our stable of vets. But based on the poll, Engelland.

Oh, buy the way, the cost for buyouts of players next offseason

Engelland - 16-17 1.083 (Saving 1.834), 17-18 (0.917) (Costs 0.917)
Smid - 16-17 0.833 (Saving 2.667), 17-18 (1.333) (Costs 1.333)
Raymond - 16-17 1.05 (Saving 2.1), 17-18 (1.05) (Costs 1.05)

In total not buying out those three would cost 9.567
Buy out cost in 16-17 - 2.966 (saving 6.601)
Buy out cost in 17-18 - 3.297

Sieloff looked really good against Vancouver. Hope he takes a huge stride in his game this year.

compared to the other defense on this team there are allot of better options out there than either but Engelland really stepped up his play in the playoffs.

If they can give him more ice this year maybe he maintains this but I dont think well ever see Smid return to his former form and thats why I voted Eng

Smid was declining allot before learning of his injury and is a warrior for sure but I think its time to walk away now healthy.

I don't know if Smid or Engelland is better right now. I'd say they're quite comparably bad.

But Smid is younger, and has been a LOT better in the past. As such, I think Smid has a higher "ceiling", if you want to call it that.

Smid probably comes back worse, because he's been injured yet again. And Engelland likely comes back worse because he's older, and coming off the best performance of his career (which, to be clear, was quite poor by NHL standards).

But at least Smid is young enough, and has enough baseline talent, that a bounce-back season is at least possible. Engelland is what he is (if we're lucky).

I honestly didn't even like a healthy Smid that much. Thought he was ok in Edmonton and liked the trade at the time but he never paired well with anyone here.

Wideman needs to be paired with someone who is a better skater than him like Russell is. He is too high risk to be paired with a slower shut down D man.

This is why I'd pair Wideman with Brodie. Engelland is also slow so I'd put him with Russell. Engalland would also help Russell with his size and toughness.
