Sad to see him go. Interesting to hear Hartley be up front about the injury concerns..
Oh well it will be a good excuse to watch some habs games. Maybe he'll be back one day!

Byron should fit in nicely on that roster.

This team talks about having players with good character and Byron is exactly that. Too bad for the injuries. As for Raymond, he's still wearing the flaming C so I sure hope he gets another gear and plays well.
Also my last post in here was an infraction but it was totally worth it.

It's not a huge loss, but if it was up to me I would have kept Byron around.

Sad to see him go. I think he was your ideal 13th forward to practice hard and slot in for an injury to kill penalties and keep the defence honest with his speed. I would rather a younger player get more minutes in Stockton than watch from the press box.
Best of luck to him in Montreal and I hope he can slot in full time for them.

For some of the guys who say we needed to get bigger....sad thing is we just got weaker and lost toughness with losing Byron. He was physical, tough, and all heart. Going to miss him.

out of curiosity, those lamenting Byron's loss, who do you think Calgary should have put on waivers instead to get down to the roster limit?

Who may I ask is on the roster in the bottom six that would be weaker or less tough than Byron? Pretty lateral IMO. The Flames got bigger and didn't lose any thougjness. I'd say they lost a bit of heart with Byron gone but that's about it. And speed. That was the one thing mighty mouse had in spades over any man on the Flames roster.

A couple of options:
-one of Hiller and Ramo
-send Bennett or Kulak down and recall them immediately as soon as Colborne/Brodie/Smid go on LTIR. I am pretty sure they could still play on wednesday that way.
Right now the flames have only 22 healthy bodies(including Raymond), plus 3 injured... so it seems Byron would've fit. It is a moot point, but there were other options. Byron was still the 13th forward to start the season, and I don't think the press box really cares who sits in it.

actually an interesting idea... must be some reason they couldn't do this?

I thought that Bennett couldn't be sent down unless it was to the minors? maybe I heard that wrong.

We were down to the Roster limit as soon as we demoted Granlund. We're a man under the roster limit right now, unless I'm missing something. It wouldn't have been a problem until Smid comes back, and at that point you do what you must and demote Raymond to the AHL. Then by the time Colborne/Brodie come back it's safe to expect more injuries and for the goaltending situation to be resolved.
What's done is done, but let's not act like it was a necessary evil. Demoting Raymond to the AHL, is a necessary evil.

Technically this would have worked, but would you really want to start the day with just 5 defensemen in town? When you send them down, they have to physically report, and if there were any travel delays it would have been pure chaos for opening night. I just don't think a GM in the NHL could take a chance on that happening. As for sending Bennett down...just no.

Interesting and i guess could have been done. I do wonder if they had to put Byron on waivers in case they make a trade that sends Ramo or Hiller out? If Flames don't want to eat 50% of either contract, more than likely they will have to take a contract back.

Double edged sword here. Sad to see Byron go because he was such a well liked team mate. Happy too see him go because it means other players had surpassed him on the depth chart. That is a good problem to have. Ferland should get the ice time slated for Byron, so this is a good thing for the team. This should make them tougher to play against. Montreal picking up Byron also frees up another contract, giving the Flames a chance to make an imbalanced deal or sign extra college free agents down the road. The positives greatly outweigh the negatives in losing Byron, so this is a good thing.

gonna miss all the things Byron brought to the team the dressing room and the confidence his coaching staff had in him .
I wish Raymond was healthy enough to make me forget Byron .
I wish Raymond had half the heart Byron has
I wish Raymond Could hit like Byron
I wish Raymond....yeah....the new whipping boy for Calgary .
Not even Raymond could become what even the likes of MAtt Stajan has become. ...I hated Stajan but this guy has really become something to be proud of .
Good Luck Paul. Youll be a fan favorite in HAbland.

The thing is and it was mentioned by Hartley is that Byron didn't have a good camp because of his injury. He just didn't play well enough to stay up and probably would have been demoted if he had passed through waivers so the line up juggling suggestions are just an exercise without any meaning.

It is possible to lament the loss without believing it was a mistake.
Sad to see Byron go because he was a hard worker who was easy to cheer for. Full stop.
But as many have also said: the Flames have other options and others have replaced him.
But I would MUCH rather have Byron here as the extra forward than Raymond.

Here's what Paul Byron wrote on the message board in the Flames dressing room - " Good luck boys! Wish everyone the best. Gonna miss everyone."
Nothing but class!
