Anyone else notice Bouma's been pretty quiet this preseason?

I wouldn't want Bouma playing his game during the preseason. Save all the nasty shot blocking and hitting for when the games matter.

I thought he was showing pretty well in at least one game earlier this pre-season but yesterday, almost everyone looked bad.

I had the same thought about Bouma as well. Hasn't done much in the preseason.

It helps but I think Hamilton's contract will be more of a determining factor. Hamilton signed a 6 year $5.75/yr contract as one of the best young defenseman in the NHL. Not sure how Gaudreau and Monahan can ask for significantly more than him.

I am okay giving Gaudreau and Monahan more if they agree to the full 8 year max. With the Flames giving Dougie the big bucks and term it will be hard to convince the guys they drafted, developed and helped turn the team around into bridge contracts.
8 years $6-$7M each depending how this season goes

Back to Drew Shore. Guy was very underwhelming again last night. He's athletic enough for the NHL, but isn't good at stick handling and loses literally every battle for the puck.
If he was a more tenacious player I could see him having success, but the guy has no jam and nothing he's done has appealed to me.
He will clear waivers and in the unlikely scenario that he doesn't, we have a contract spot open.

I like Shore - but I just think he will just be a reliable depth guy, and nothing more. 2 years ago he would have been a much more important asset for the Flames. There are just a lot of solid depth guys coming through the organization now. Still hope he clears waivers (I assume Flames will end up exposing him to send him down), but if he gets claimed I won't be too disappointed.
He doesn't make many mistakes out there, however. Just an 'ok' prospect to me.

My vote is goes to Kulak play with Brodie (at least gove it a few games) and Engelland would work well as a #7.
Theres a good chance whoever they start with Engelland will show poorly because of him.

Anytime you find yourself typing this, it is usually a good time to step back and re-evaluate your own opinion.
Imagine you're the coach of another team playing against the Flames, and they ice a pairing of Brodie/Kulak. What do you do?
I have my guys throw it into Brodie's corner all night and pound the crap out of him along the boards because I have no concerns at all that Kulak can do anything about it.
At least Engelland can offer physical support.
(and the reason it doesn't happen with Giordano/Brodie is because, when they are out there, the other team can never control the play).
Brodie needs more than a Kulak as a partner or he will get worn down IMO.
My guess is that management probably CAN see what is going on, just an opinion though.

I feel like with the Flames current depth he wouldn't even be the 3rd farm call-up. Hathaway has shown more in less time than Shore. Granlund is looking better than last year. Poirier should be able to pick it back up once he gets his speedy legs back under him. Arnold is also younger and has looked like a steady bottom 6 player. Klimchuk is also a very steady but non flashy player who is 4 years younger and might be ready for a callup come trade deadline. Hell even BVB was looking quick and more determined this camp.
If Shore wasn't waiver eligible he wouldn't have outlasted these guys in camp. He's waiver eligible and not good enough to be a mainstay in the NHL. Obviously losing an asset for nothing isn't ideal, but I'm not going to lose sleep if Shore is no longer part of the organization.

Sounds like Shore has been waived, according to Twitterverse.

Brodie is also a bit of a punk out there. I find he's mouthing off the opposition and initiating scrums a lot but mostly out of protecting his goalie. It puts my mind at ease knowing that no one is going to do anything to Brodie while Engelland is paired up with him. I think it allows Brodie to play whatever game he feels like knowing he has his back covered.

There were a couple of instances when he was out with Bouma and Jooris last night, and all three of them just looked lost in the defensive zone. I don't know if it's because they've all spent time at center, but it seemed like there was either a lot of hesitation as to who should go down low to help the D, or else two of them would start to, leaving a lot of ice in the slot to the points available.

I don't recall Brodie saying a word to anyone in any scrum ever. He's the quietest player on the Flames roster I'd say. He'll push and shove in front of his goal, but I never see him mouthing off.

Bouma does some great things, such as shot blocking and hitting, but he really needs to learn how to "stick" to his forecheck. I find he always loses his man after the initial hit. He needs to learn to get on the right side (ie, between the opposition and the puck). Also needs to win more puck battles. For someone with his size and strength, he loses way too many of these battles.
Same thing with Tyler Wotherspoon. There was a play last night where he hit the puck carrier along the boards, but then ended up on the wrong side, and the attacker went in on a two on one. Something he really needs to work on.

IMO, Brodie is one of the least punkish players in the NHL. But I do agree that Engelland allows him to play his game.
