Pretty cool site. You get a visual representation of percentage contribution to total team salary TY vs LY.

Looks to me like orange represents players who did not finish the year on the team's roster.

From this I learned that, as a percentage, Calgary spends the 2nd most on defense of any team in the NHL.
 Montreal is first at 29.1%
 Calgary 28.7%
 Washington 28.3%
 Tampa Bay 25.7%
 Philadelphia 25.1%
 Chicago 23.4%

Sorry, it's late. What am I missing? Calgary is at 39% for me with forwards 50% and goalies 11%. 0 cap space.

Winnipeg is greater at 45% of used cap space on defense.

Oh driveway, you're looking at total cost. The 28.7 number is in millions for the Flames, not percentage. Winnipeg is 26.8M but their total salary cap, from that chart, is only 60M.

Still interesting we can say Calgary pays second most on defense. I find that interesting.
I also wonder how much Montreal's defensive investment is helping Price look so good.

Or maybe it's why the Habs can't score enough goals?

Even HF Boards agree that the Flames have a top-3 defense in the NHL. Our top end players are signed to very reasonable deals, while our bottom 2 are overpaid. Once Engelland and Smid are off the books, Calgary will still have a top-3 d-core and probably also be paying less for our bottom pairing (or pay better defensemen the same salary).
