It just goes to show, while people sit back and complain that the Conservatives are cowtowing to the evil corporations.

The NDP is pretty hard in bed with the Unions as they represent significant funding, voter blocks and cheap campaign workers and third party advertising.

Basically by phoning Tom and spanking him and saying keep this issue under wraps it will be interesting to see if the press jumps on this hard and asks him if he's changed his viewpoint.

Anyone with a sense of reality would know that Trudeau is just a face for the Liberal party's administration team. Maybe not the best face, but damned if the young go-getter isn't drawing in the centrist 18-29 crowd. It doesn't really matter though anyways, because even of Trudeau wielded personal PM powers in the chance he got elected, he cannot overrule the lower house in what is likely going to be a minority government ruling the HOC in a few weeks. He'd have to play nice with the NDP and even CPC to get any semblance of a functioning cabinet, which is an oxymoron in itself.

Quote:
Canada's economy expanded by 0.3 per cent in July, down from June's 0.4 per cent growth but ahead of what economists had been expecting. Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that the expansion was broad based, with the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction, manufacturing, and finance and insurance sectors all showing growth.
Economists had been expecting growth to come in at around 0.2 per cent.
Quote:
Scotiabank noted in a commentary after the numbers were released Wednesday that while it's still early, the third quarter is currently tracking at 2.3 per cent annualized growth compared to the second quarter — well ahead of the Bank of Canada's forecast of 1.5 per cent, and further evidence the economy might be improving.
"[The] positive print for July GDP... further reinforces our understanding that the economy is turning higher into the third quarter," the bank said.
Benjamin Reitzes at Bank of Montreal agreed, saying "the back-to-back gains in GDP suggest that the economy rebounded firmly from the very weak first half of 2015."
Lies!! we need 10's of billions of dollars in deficit financed stimulus now!!

Harper has clearly cooked the books.

That aside, its nice to read some positive news on our economy for once.

Well the UCCB cheques did conveniently drop $2-3B into the economy in July.

NDP can't play both sides of this issue as it will split their caucus. Will see how Mulclair handles it.

Should be no problem, he can just tell the union one thing and the rest of the country another.

HEBERT: Trudeau’s deficit gambit could go either way

The upside....

Quote:
There is no lack of independent economic analysis to back Trudeau’s contention that at this time, stimulating the Canadian economy — in particular through investments in infrastructures — should take precedence over balancing the books.

On the scale of the federal budget, the deficits the Liberals say they are contemplating are modest ones.

After a decade of Conservative rule marked by a dearth of big policy initiatives, the pendulum may be swinging back to government activism and a national leadership that is more aspirational than managerial.

Trudeau’s move sets the party apart from its main opposition rival. In this campaign, the NDP is going out of its way to come across as reassuring. That makes strategic sense but it does create an inspirational vacuum for the Liberals to exploit.
The downside......

Quote:
It is usually harder to come out of the deficit rabbit hole than to jump in it. No one has a take on what shape the global economy will take over the next four years and no one — including Trudeau — can guarantee a painless return to budget balance.

Canadians are not religious about deficits. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, who both won stronger mandates despite having failed to balance the books, can testify to that.

But over the past few decades, most voters have still come to treat a commitment to fiscal discipline as a basic requirement for higher office.
Polls suggest that, of the three main leaders, Trudeau is the least trusted on economic policy. Given that, there are limits to the cover Paul Martin — the man who as finance minister brought Canada out of a structural deficit vortex — can provide his successor.

Sure he will, he'll just talk to the union in French. Saying one thing in French and another in English is pretty common these days.

Victoria Liberal candidate, Cheryl Thomas, is the latest to have to withdraw after dumb social media comments caught up with her. Can't seem to link the CBC article from my phone. Gotta say that these ones were worse than the NDP candidate's from last week.

Which is weird because all the damned dirty pot-smoking hippies of the 60s (who grew into the coke-snorting Yuppies of the 80s) are now in their 60s.

I guess that's why the latest "ooga-booga -- Drugs are bad!" ads talk about how much more potent and dangerous today's pot is compared to the dank weed they used to smoke back then.

Dropped off my advanced poll ballot at the Canadian Consulate here in Fukuoka yesterday. My local riding back in Calgs is Calgary Confederation. I voted Liberal (Matt Grant).

This is going to be an interesting election, I am looking forward to things heating up going into the home stretch, I will watch keenly from over here and look forward to seeing how everything turns out Oct 19!
