Why is that whenever a story with any kind of illegal drug comes out there is always someone trying to advocate for how that drug really isn't that bad. I don't get the fascination with drugs especially if they're illegal, not only is there the risk of addiction and health factors there's the chance that you lose your professional life and possibly a lot of your personal life. Look at Mike Richards for example. It may be the "cool" thing to do but I still kind of find it disturbing that it's that common in the NHL.

Because we seemingly picked 2 drugs that are killing machines and kept them legal while the others (some of which are genuinely a lot safer) are illegal. There's also the fact that most of the bad you hear about these drugs is severely skewed and represents the worst case scenario, when the reality is the majority of people have no issues with occasional use and they, as you say, have to risk a lot just to be able to make an adult decision to let loose and have some fun... Like most NHL'rs according to this OP.

Don't take that as me advocating of drug use. Just explaining why some people always roll their eyes and say it's not a big deal.

Are they partying harder than the "average joe"? Take a random sample of tradesmen or oil patch workers in their 20s and see how they party? or for that matter even your average undergraduate student with a little bit of parental cash. Or even your average NHLer in the 1980s.

I think the people taking the laissez-faire attitude to it are just not surprised by this, because it's pretty common anywhere, not just the NHL.

Personally, I don't think I've ever actually seen coke with my own eyes, but growing up in a wealthy area I knew/know a lot of people who have done it or still do. Some have had problems, some haven't. Just like any mind-altering substance.

As someone who's done pretty much all drugs except for anything intravenous, cocaine is by far the crappiest one. You don't laugh on it. You barely smile. You don't want to eat. Music sucks on it. You can't sleep. And good luck getting your Johnson up. It's nothing close to what the movies portray. Sure the initial rush is cool, but it quickly wears off and you never reach that plateau again.

Looking back on it, I never quite understood what I found so cool in it. I guess the act of snorting it is somewhat fun. Chopping it up. Rolling up the bill. The butterflies in your stomach which sometimes results in you puking before you've even had a sniff. And it's neat how it makes your face numb if it's good stuff. Some people say it makes them more confident. But I only found that to be true in the days that followed when your still sketched out.

In general it sucks. So many more better things out there.

Another issue here is that people have a view of Nordic Europe being very liberal and progressive. Sweden is quite conservative in some ways, particularly as it comes to recreational drugs. They have some of the strictest anti-drug policies in the world. Recreational drug use is extremely low among Swedes too:

Never once tried it (bad family history with it), but I've certainly been to enough shakers or pre-gaming parties back in the day where it was going around. When you're not high on it, it's so annoying being around someone who is.

Just talk your damn ear off non-stop at lightning speed about nothing. Shut up and let me watch the game already, I'm not even looking at you while you're talking. Take a hint.

My one buddy is the worst at that. Turns into this automated talking robot and tells the same stories he's been telling for the last 20 years. He's got this wide bug eyed look and he tries to make the story seem so intense. Deep down I'm just like ''shut the hell up buddy''.

Yeah, being around people who are high on it sucks.

Yeah, good call with the bug eyes. It's actually kinda scary looking at them like that, they just look SO messed up.

Drunk people are yappy too, but in a much more entertaining way. They have drunk guy energy and are usually being pretty funny. Same with people on weed, they're usually really giggly which is funny. But people on coke are just annoying. They're acting all serious like they wanna have a life talk and they've got er all figured out, and are gonna tell ya all about it. It doesn't even seem fun.

And the stories usually revolve around how awesome they are or how bad other people are compared to them. It's like the drug that gives someone inflated ego.

I knew one guy that used to do coke at every party and he would always get in fights with people because he would take something the wrong way or an insult.

At least someone on psychedelics has some interesting things to say.

The reddit version of this thread is epic. If you have a chance check it out. I won't link it here though as there is some slanderous stories there.

The first time I read this through I thought you were talking about alcohol and drunks.

Yep...people on cocaine are generally the worst.

Whatever you do, do not get a person high on cocaine started about a topic like politics or music. Those seem to the worst possible topics as they combine historical facts to rattle off verbatim and egotistical opinions.

In fact, now that I think about people who are high on cocaine should be avoided at all costs.

One comment that rang out for me from there was something like:

"If you're looking for 20-something's with no education who were handed millions of dollars for playing a game to act as role models all of the time, you're going to have a bad time"

This is so true. Even with that said, they do an unreal job keeping themselves out of the media for the most part... Well up until this summer.
