Hey UCB, I was wondering if you could explain and maybe provide some insight into the changes they've made to the rules in the scrum over the last couple of years. I assume it's all to do with injury prevention but never heard the actual reasons behind it, and rugby broadcasts in New Zealand don't exactly spoon feed you the rules.

My rugby knowledge pails in comparison to UCB but I will try to answer.

The old sequence was Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage. The Touch step was added to ensure the props were within touching distance of each other before the packs pushed, which reduced the force of the scrum. Unfortunately this was still a dangerous activity and didn't do anything to reduce the number of collapsed scrums.

The recent rule change makes the sequence Crouch, Bind, Set. The props now need to engage each other and wait for the Ref to be happy before the packs can push. Since there is no longer a gap between the packs before pushing the force in the scrum has been greatly reduced. It also has the added benefit of reducing collapsed scrums and speeding up the game.

Gotcha. Yeah there is nothing more annoying than 2+ scrum resets in a row. It seems to happen more often in super rugby than it has in this world cup.

I believe they were testing the new rules in the last Super Rugby season so it took a while for the forwards to get used to it.

I agree there is nothing worse in Rugby than watching scrums constantly reset while the clock ticks away. This got so bad in Super Rugby a couple years ago I almost started liking Rugby league more than Union

Yeah the season they were doing touch set was brutal. It was like NFL style time wasting.

I'm seeing a lot of white guys for a match between Tonga and Namibia.

Isnt Namibia on the South-Western coast of Africa?

I just looked this up - Namibia have the second highest population of Afrikaners after South Africa so there's your explanation.

Yeah it's odd how one of those countries picked rugby and the other picked cricket.

Looking forward to this week's matches. Dammit, I really have to go to this one day.

Eng v Aus.

That is the only game that counts.

I can't wait for the white Zimbabwean at the back of the Aussie pack to smash the pommies.

I can't wait to see the English not leave the pool stage.

Thanked for linking together the on topic rugby posts with the white people from Africa posts. Well done. Interestingly enough I am also a white guy who emigrated to Brisbane, Australia but unfortunately have nothing else in common with David Pocock.

Yep, definitely looking forward to the Wallabies smashing the Poms and sending the English sports media into a frenzy. It should be a great long weekend of sports here with the Rugby league grand final on Sunday night and Australia vs England on Monday morning.

I don't often cheer for the Wallabies, but I'm making an exception this time because I too want to see English sports media implode and I think Australia will win one of the two games vs England & Wales. That being said, it's gonna be a tough game to win at Twickenham, and I'm not convinced Quade Cooper can handle the pressure

It is nice to see Kiwi and Aussie sports fans agree on one thing, their dislike of the English.

Thankfully for Quade the game is in London and not Auckland so the pressure will not be as severe. He is very inconsistent though and Cheika is taking a big risk by starting him against England. If he plays well the crowd will be in awe of his creativity and Australia will have an easy bonus point victory but if he plays poorly the Wallabies are almost guaranteed to lose.

Thanks, BamBam is one of my favourite players.

I have seen the team lists and reckon that the Aussies will win by 10 points. The english backrow won't be able to neutralize the Aussie backrow. The game will be won/lost at the breakdown.

So, basically Wales potentially blew it yesterday by failing to secure the bonus point which would have pretty much guaranteed them qualification.

That potentially gives the Aussies a second shot at qualifying if England beat them whereas the bonus point against Fuji would have brought that out of play and made an Aussie win worthless.
