All Maple Leafs broadcasts should be banned from the airwaves.
Toronto Maple Leafs are no good.

That didn't take long. Apparently Rogers has changed their minds, the radio crew will travel and call games from the road.

Senior executives from both Rogers Communications Inc. and BCE Inc., which share the Leafs’ radio rights as well as ownership of the team, apparently reversed a decision to have the duo call the road games from a Toronto studio this season rather than spend about $130,000 to travel to road games. Neither company would officially confirm the change, but a source from one company said the reversal was done, while a source from the other company said it was in the works – but the situation “remained fluid.”

I'm surprised they haven't decided to just re-broadcast all their games from '93 instead of the live ones from this season.

Honestly, that seems reasonable to me.

Sure.
But good PBP people and media people know what is a story and what is something that should be kept private.

Sure it is, but all teams basically do the same things and the media on that plane know what they heard and what they didn't hear.
And if you violate that privilege you find yourself without a boarding pass next time.
Punting them prior to any violation is a power play.

I've felt for a long time that Leaf's media is out of control, even to the point of running the team. Not actually running it but every move that management makes needs the approval of the media after the fact or they don't last. If this moves some of the media a little away from the team, I can understand it.

I can see wanting guys who write columns or host a sports radio show off the plane, but its not like the radio announce team is up there breaking stories on the plane.
And unless its players only (which I highly doubt it is), there are still coaches, GMs, and execs on the plane so its not anything like the dressing room anyways.

I wonder if this happens all of the time.
Do UEFA commentators really fly to Kazakhstan, Albania or the Faroe Islands?
Does TSN really travel to Edmonton and Regina? Ick.

I'm quite certain that Buffalo has done this in recent seasons. I think Rick Jeanneret does the call on both the MSG Cable Network and on WGR Radio.

I don't think I ever heard Maher say more about players than "it was a quiet plane ride home". I seem to recall some travel conversations with coaches or management from Maher, though.

CBC used to do this all the time when it came to some of their weekend amateur sports that they would cover. CBC Calgary had a studio in their building dedicated to doing just this at one point in time. That being said, I think it's easier to call a ski race from a tv than it is to call a football or a hockey game without being able to see the whole ice/playing field.

Back in the day I listened to minor league baseball games much like this. They didn't have a TV broadcast so the away game was recreated in the radio studio with sound tracks of the roar of the crowd and the bat hitting the ball etc. It sounded good to me as a kid and led to some late nights listening to the home town team playing in Hawaii.

I think some people are a little confused here with the actual broadcasters who have been reportedly kicked off the plane. The TV and radio guys were the ones who were told they would not be flying with the team and a decision was made but has since been changed to not have the radio guys travel on away games.
These guys are the Rick Ball/Kelly Hrudey Peter Loubo/ Derek Wills for the Flames. These are not the type of guys who normally trash talk teams, question management, start rumors and such. The media people who are always causing a stir in Toronto are the bloggers, the newspaper people, the tv sports people etc
I think Lou could have gotten away with some of his old school rules on a team like NJ who does play in the shadow of the NY teams but when your in a media hot bed like Toronto, you NEED a certain element of media support. I do personally like some of the policies that Lou has had in places like NJ and now Toronto but I don't know if some of them are practical for 2015/2016 in the #1 media market in the league.
