Default Leafs Road Game Radio Broadcasts to be done off TV

Quote:
Multiple sources are telling me that the direct result of the Toronto Maple Leafs banning Bowen and Ralph from team charters (along with TV folks) is that the radio crew will be left to call the games from a studio, here in Toronto, watching on tv!!

This is crazy if its true. The Leafs make money by the boatload and they can't get their radio guys to road games?

That's one way to kill the atmosphere of the event.

The Leafs are pinching pennies? Wow, they must be running on empty after paying Lamourello and Babcock...

What's the back story on the media ban on team plane?
Do other teams piggyback the media?

Rogers and Bell also make money by the boatloads...and this is their responsibility, not the Leafs. And yes I know they own the Leafs but that's not the same. Rogers and Bell should pay not piggy back off the Leafs.

No idea why, but I hope it's because the organization is sick and tired of how the media treats the players. Wouldn't surprise me with how Lou runs things that he's taking a stand against them. If that's the case, then I'm all for it.

It obviously has nothing to do with money.

Leafs shell out millions to sign Babcock, Lou and whoever else, but yeah, they want to save a few bucks when it comes to Bowen flying on the team plane.

This year is going to be crap and I'm guessing they want to build more of a buffer zone between the media and the team.

I wonder if this was requested by Babcock. When things are going bad there it's amongst the worst places to work in North America in any sport. Maybe this is his way of trying to keep as much in house as possible.

I dont know, but I cant tell you from having heard a few remote broadcasts, this is going to suck pretty hard. This is selling out their fans and honestly, if I was a radio sponsor I'd be pulling my cash over a stunt like this.

Leafs management has said that they now view the charter as an extension of the dressing room and thusly, a place for players to be able to have privacy, speak their minds, receive treatment, build camraderie, etc. and not a place for the media.

I'm surprised these stations don't just play the TV broadcast crew's audio over the radio.

A good radio play-by-play guy is saying far more than his counterpart on TV. Peter Maher is an excellent example of this - he was amazing at painting a picture of what was happening on the ice.

TV guys need to be far less descriptive on television where the viewer is seeing all of the action themselves. You can't compare the two mediums as far as delivering play by play goes.

Because a good TV pbp announcer often allows the pictures to speak for themselves...a Radio guy abhors "dead air"

The "simulcast" model just doesn't work well for the differing media

And I speak as a guy that has had some experience doing High School Basketball and Baseball on a 5000 watt local radio station

How is it the Leafs responsibility? This is a Rogers and Bell issue.

this is all Lou Lamoreillo. Mike Emrick flew commercial for years. The crews in recent years with the Devils did as well. Can't blame MLSE or the broadcasters for this one. Its all on Lou.

I never said it was, I don't know who's responsibility it is, I just said that if I'm paying to advertise on a radio show that is now garbage and no one listens to it then I'd want my money back.

It will get resolved. Yet, Lou is trying to make his point. Whatever the hell it is.
