They went to the East final two years ago, and might have beat the Rags without the Price injury. They are a perennial playoff team with Price in net, and a contender if everything goes right. Price himself might gives a real ordinary team a very real chance.
Which means they are probably correctly rated, if they are around 10th.

Quite honestly, I dont see any team in the East as a true Cup 'Contender.'

For the time being, despite last season's hiccup, The Hawks, Ducks and Kings are just too good.

In 2003-04, the Penguins finished last in the NHL with 58 points.
Their top scorer had 52 points.

Then they drafted Sidney Crosby.

When Sidney Crosby was a rookie, he put up 102 points.
The second highest scorer on the team put up 58 points.
The Penguins finished 29th in the NHL with the same 58 points.

My argument is, if a 102 point Crosby doesn't get the team any more points than the previous year, what is McDavid going to do for the Oilers?

And then they won the cup within the next 5 years...... Which was the point of the article.

I thought the article was making predictions for this year.

My argument is that McDavid does nothing for them this year. 5 years, maybe.

I'd give them 6 First Round draft picks for him.

They'd probably laugh at me.

What people always forget though is Crosby had Mario Lemieux as his mentor. He also had Malkin, Letang, Fleury, Talbot, Gonchar, etc and Dan Bylsma was the coach.

The Oilers have a mopey room, no leadership and a coach that couldn't do anything with a great Sharks roster.

Instead of Crosby, why not look at another 'generational talent' in Ovechkin. How many cups has he won? How was Alexandre Daigle's career?

In the end, whether it's Crosby, Ovechkin or Daigle you look at the story is the same: it's a team game. Daigle proves that not every 'generational talent' lives up to insane hype at the professional level. Ovechkin proves you need a team and a leader to take home the big prize.

Crosby was absolutely ushered into the league with a far greater opportunity of success than McDavid is.

Crosby wasn't even the Pens best player when they won the cup...these predictions are stupid. Edmonton has no D or proven goal tending, the two most important things

Interesting list.

The comments about the Ducks and Pens are right on the money IMO. They're in 'win now' mode 'cause a storm is coming.

But you are forgetting that the Oilers have much more than the Penguins had in Crosby's first year.

The Oilers also have:

- the best LW in the game in Hall, he's going to break 100 points;
- toe drag king Eberle, he's going to score 40 goals, 30 toe drag specials;
- 2015/2016 Selke winner RNH, he's going to score 80 points on the second line and shutdown the opposition's top lines;
- Yakupov is going to breakout with another 40 goals;
- a young Jagr in Draisatl;
- 2015/2016 Norris winner Justin Schultz;
- a young Chris Pronger in Nurse.

Frankly, 100 points for McDavid would be a disappointment with those linemates. He better get 150 points.

If you're wrong its no biggie, people forget everything over time. See? Most people have already forgotten that the Oilers suck a hard, crusty one and they sucked as recently as a few months ago! they still suck!

To be fair, there's about as much evidence that Todd McClellan is a good coach as there is that Dan Bylsma is a good coach. He certainly hadn't proven anything when he started coaching Crosby.

The most interesting aspect of that article to me is that we get to see The Oilers Fallacy unfold within a single paragraph. That being, of course, that a bunch of ifs somehow turns into a when without any justification:

Quote:
There’s simply no precedent in NHL history for a superstar rookie arriving and turning his team into a contender overnight. (And that assumes that McDavid really will be a Crosby-like franchise player, which seems like a safe enough bet but is no sure thing.) Even given some of the talent the Oilers already have — these guys aren’t the ’85 Penguins by a long shot — they’re unlikely to emerge as a truly elite team for at least two or three more years. But unless McDavid is a bust, or the new management team finds a way to screw up a sure thing, they’ll almost certainly get there well before our five-year window expires. And when that happens, look out.
No sure thing, no sure thing, almost certain, OH AND WHEN THAT HAPPENS FOR SURE EVERYBODY LOOK OUT.

Sigh.

HMMV but if almost all their chances ride on one single player...

A: Not getting hurt,
B: Not getting burned out,
C: Not having an off year,
D: Not hitting a slump at the wrong time

... then they can't be that likely.
