Oh darn.
Seems odd to scratch a bubble player for an exhibition. You'd think they want to look at him more than they need to look at most roster players from last year.

Jooris also did not play, but he is less of a bubble player than Arnold so it makes more sense.
Nakladal has some potential to make the team. Good frame and moves well. Seems to have decent hockey sense. i thought he was playing with intensity
The most interesting storyline to me is still in net

Agreed, I thought Nakladal looked great. Very steady, made some good plays at the offensive blueline. He didn't look tentative or like he needed to adjust at all. If he, Wilson, or Wotherspoon can overtake Engelland, it would be great.

I am not an Engelland hater, but I do wonder if he is waiver bait before the season starts.

Every single time Burke or Treliving are asked about the teams success, they always praise these two acquisitions. I don't think they aren't going anywhere. If they lose their job, they will be the 13th forward and the 7th defenseman, and it is OKAY to put them in those positions because you don't have to worry about ruining their development.
The coaches and the management, like having these two on the team, because it gives the other players confidence to play their game. The team is not desperate at all to lose their cap hits.
I think that some of you just need to deal with the fact that these two are important members of this team and are viewed as such by the players, the coaches, and the management, and many fans also see their value. They aren't going anywhere unless they are supplanted by a younger or tougher player who can play that role.
Under Burke and Treliving, there will always be a face puncher, a goon, an enforcer, a tough guy. You can count on it. If you get rid of Bollig, there will be another (maybe Hunter Smith or Austin Carrol). If you get rid of Engelland, there will be another (maybe Keegan Kanzig).

The locker room stuff is not to be under estimated. Even though Engelland and Bollig should be extra players once the season starts, their presence in the room is what they are really here for. The remainder of the team will sort itself out, but those guys will be there. Once the young guys establish themselves better, you'll see them moved out. Right now they are still necessary. It's the same thing with Stajan. Once Bill Arnold is ready to take his spot, Stajan will move and that will likely be this time next year.
As much as people want contender mode to begin, we technically are only in year three of a rebuild. It'll take some time for them to grow into that.

#Flames announce that 6th round pick Andrew Mangiapane has been sent back to Barrie. The diminutive spark plug impressed with a great camp.

I liked Nakladal except for the late 2-on-1 where he couldn't stop the pass.

I don't really disagree with what you are saying in terms of importance to the team, because I'm still in the camp that these guys matter over the course of a season. However, do we really need to spend over $4 million on Engelland and Bollig when we're already up against the cap? Same thing goes for guys like Stajan. Like them or not...believe they're important or not...you can't afford to pay 4th line players and 6th/7th defensemen over $3 million a season and expect to pay your talented players what the market dictates. I respect and appreciate all 3 of the guys I mentioned, but I don't see them with the team much longer simply because of cap complications.
Also, finding a way to rid ourselves of Raymond's contract would allow us to keep these guys a little longer, so that has to be a priority for Treliving unless Mason manages to get to a middle 6 winger level again. Personally, I don't see it.

From all accounts it sounds like he was a bit of star this camp? Too bad he was sent home so early, I was hoping to see him in action on Friday.

Yeah he was but I think he just needs some physical development. He reminded me of Merkley.

It still amazes me how often you see NHL defenseman allow the pass on a two on one. Take the pass away and give the goalie the shooter.

Scoring Winger
|
What's the word on Bennett. I didn't see the game last night but he's yet to show up on the scoreboard. Is he playing well, and getting chances or should we be concerned his game is not going to translate to the NHL level. Don't get me wrong, I though he played well in the playoffs but the points were not there.

I really liked Bollig down the stretch and in the playoffs. I'm fine with him on the 4th line.
Engellend I could do without, but 7th D-man he's a good option

He looks much faster than he did last year and tenacious as hell. Just didn't come through on the score boards. Last 5 flames on the ice Bennett-Monahan-Gaudreau Giordano-Hamilton.
