I think it's more about the personalization of the hunter than of the animal. If the same animal was killed by anonymous local poachers, it would get posted on some conservation blogs, maybe make the science/nature page of some international news sites, but be out of the news cycle in a day or two.
But as we're seeing from the backlash against the Idaho giraffe hunter and such, it's more about westerners behaving in ways that other westerners feel is unethical.

I don't really think so. The giraffe hunter is only getting noticed because of the Lion fiasco. When a big story like that hits everyone picks up on other similar stories. Eventually this will die down. Honestly, this stuff happens in Alberta as well and not one story about that has come to light. People bait big horn sheep out of the national parks, sometimes even within the park limits and then drag them out. Same with bears.
And again, the only reason the lion story came to light was because of it's status. Animals get slaughtered in all kinds of disgusting manners and we don't read about it in social media like we have about Cecil.

This is kind of the point. Maybe if we start making a big deal about these things more often, eventually the behaviour will be weeded out.
People are focusing entirely too much on why people are paying more attention to Cecil than other animal atrocities. It doesn't matter. What matters is that the awareness that comes from these types of stories can hopefully bring people who otherwise wouldn't know or care into the issue and further grow awareness of these and similar issues.

Hopefully only after wounding him and then hunting and chasing him him down for about 40 hours or so......it only seems fair.

Palmer's comments in that story can be reduced to five words: "Me, me, me, me, me."

^^^ I recall there being a pretty significant backlash when that story first broke a year or so ago.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the grizzly bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act in 1975, meaning it is considered likely to become endangered ("endangered" means a species is considered in danger of extinction within all or a significant portion of its range).

I checked the reputable source of wikipedia which lists them as least concerned. I'm sure they don't have gopher like numbers, but they aren't like lions.
Anyways, in nor condoning what Stoner did, just mentioning why the pitchforks aren't out for him with the same fervor as they were for Cecils killer.
