How about being down there during the whole Castro/sick thing? Could you even notice what was going on at your resort........anyone talking about it?

Varadero is stunning...the beach is the best Ive seen anywhere...sand like talcum powder...water about 90 degrees...and the best thing is noone goes in the summer...the resort was only about 25% full...we had the beach to ourselves. The pics on the beach are all in the early afternoon...just miles of sand and surf. I was aware of Castros illness before we left, and believe it or not most Cubans love Fidel and their lot in life. The average salary is about $25 a month and they are rationed food and other staples. You would never know it by talking to the people as they are the friendliest by far in the Caribbean. I think IF the USA went into Cuba after Fidels death it would spell disaster for most average Cubans...they would end up destitute as corporations moved theor own people onto the island.
I dont think we'll see a major transformation on that island without a bloody revolution...much worse than Castro's of 1959.
There were a few Edmontonians and Vancouverites at the resort...most were from Toronto and area and Europe.
