I did watch the presser that Global had and nothing new that wasn't already released before it, however they are holding another presser at 10 am tomorrow, where there will be a question period. Hopefully we can find out more. I just felt sick to my stomach watching the presser.

I really can't find the words to describe this tragedy. How can anyone harm a child, much less a two year old?

So while it's probably safe to assume the boyfriend did it, we don't know for sure yet? Same with motive?

Hey I'm not defending him, or saying we shouldn't speculate. I'm not coming anywhere the innocent till proven guilty talk. I'm just asking for what we know for sure. I'm trying to catch up.

I know its an emotional time, but I think you misinterpreted the tone of my post. Just asking for info.

Instead he'll get 3 meals a day, a nice bed, and Internet and TV for the rest of his life. Hopefully he gets beaten to death in jail.

This makes me sick. How do you look in a kids eyes and harm them? I can't fathom that. Takes one twisted individual to be able to hurt a child.

Over the years I slowly came around to believe the death penalty was wrong. If one innocent man or woman is executed, the system has failed. But when we have these types of incidents it makes me feel the death penalty should exist in Canada. If the idea that doing something like this could cost you your life, stopped one person from committing an act like this, it is equally justified to exist IMO.

The big question I guess is, "Are more innocent people going to be executed, or are more innocent lives going to be saved by it's existence?"

If someone, could somehow answer that question, it would be much easier to justify the the fact that whatever evil human being did this, will still have the privilege of some sort of life, as undignified as it may end up, it it still life. Something a two year old, a pure innocent two year old, has been robbed of.

This probably isn't the thread for this but I've always read that the difference between life sentences and death sentences don't typically dissuade killers.

I think it is a completely unquantifiable stat. It would be impossible to gather reliable data. Who is going to be able to say "I stopped myself from committing a murder because I feared the death penalty." or "I did commit the murder because I knew I wouldn't be executed if caught." An absolutely impossible question to answer, because they variables are practically infinite, especially in crimes of passion.

Regardless, you are right, probably not the time or place for the argument.

RIP Hailey.

Heartbreaking. I can not believe that such horrible people exist.

Thoughts are with this poor little angel and her mother.

I'm pretty sure there is a thread about capital punishment if you all want to spark the never ending debate. This thread should not be sidetracked as such..

Here's a google maps link showing the dry cleaners where the suspect worked and the van with the flag, presumably the vehicle the RCMP were looking for:

Wouldn't the data come from states/countries that had the death penalty and then abolished it?

Yeah, good point, I was actually just genuinely curious, but there's other times/places for that.
