Discussion is fine I just don't understand why people are against something like a military night? Sure, if the Flames we're forcing you or shaming you into giving away tickets then that's fine, be outraged, but a military night has literally ZERO impact on your life.

If your point is why don't we have a "first response" night with Firefighters, Police and EMS workers, then I agree. We should have one.

EMS especially. They are seriously the least appreciated and least compensated people out there. I'd gladly give up my tickets to a game for them, although my tickets suck...

And yes, you see soldiers honoured at every sporting event. We even do it here where we honour a soldier - who is basically just standing in as a proxy for the military as a whole - at nearly every Flames game.

That is most certainly not what happens for any other group. I can't even remember the last time we had a single night dedicated to police/fire/first responders at a Flames game. We did give construction workers a pre-season game for their work in restoring the Dome after the flood though.

Respecting the military as it exists today, and respecting the veterans who served in the past does not require that public sporting events become a pulpit for nationalistic jingoism.
I think Canada and Canadians can use a little bit of nationalism. It's not like we are Germany or the USA.

Nothing bad will happen from Canadians honoring military personal at sporting events both symbolically for past bravery and for potential future conflicts that may arise. I give you a personal guarantee.

The people arguing against military night have been explaining themselves, just because some find their viewpoints to be entirely unsympathetic, doesn't mean they should just keep it to themselves.

I'm a firm believer in "nothing is sacred": no taboo subjects and everything is open to discussion and criticism. It is intellectually dishonest to dismiss any idea outright.

I've really never understood why someones sexuality is a place of "pride". I don't quite get that. It's not an accomplishment one way or another, its not something you choose, it's just a part of who you are. I think the whole pride thing is actually kinda silly, as if painting a cross walk somehow unifies our city against people that don't support homosexuality. It doesn't accomplish any goal. The people that support it will rave about how much they like it, and this will in turn, only further bother the people that don't support it. A parade causes the same thing.

That's because no one has made you ashamed of your sexuality. It's not pride in their sexuality. It's about instilling pride in who they are despite the many who tell them they should be ashamed of who they are.

Why do so many people misunderstand that?

Pride "marches" (with roots in protest) are morphing into celebratory parades with active participation of LGBTQ allies and gaining public favour every year. So yes, the goals of unification, tolerance and acceptance are being met. The people bothered by it dwindle every year.

While the numbers are dwindling, I don't think they are dwindling as fast as people think they are. The number of people willing to speak out about things is what is dwindling significantly because of the fear that they will be publicly shamed if they do (like that girl with the Dear Fat People video). That doesn't change what people feel deep down, it just suppresses it. The hate and disdain is still there, it's just not as visible.

While true, the simple fact is that nobody is born prejudiced. We are all taught it. So this generation's bigots shutting up means the next generation is less likely to pick up on the habit.

I'm not sold on it. Bigots will still be bigots at home where kids do much of their learning.

FYI, she is a comedian, and I would suspect much of what she does is designed to drive hit to her youtube page.

She is in the business of "there is no bad publicity", did you ever think there is a reason she took the approach she did.

On the topic at hand, I have no problem "shaming' those that take a stance contrary to Human Rights & Equality.

You need look no further than this ####ing mess in the US:

frankly I think resorting to public shaming is for those not intelligent enough to actually make a difference. It's like using guilt to get your way in a relationship, it's a winning way to happiness!

To not be sold on that is to ignore reasoning and history.

Yes, and having public figures, and childhood heroes, visibly support these issues will result in those kids telling their parents that what they say is not cool. I know I have done it, from a pretty young age too (probably 13 or 14). Bigoted and prejudiced people keeping their outdated opinions to themselves is already progress.

If one kid that would otherwise be a homophobe or racist doesn't become one because of things like Pride parades, then they're worth the time.
