Deserves a thread of its own because CNRL is a defacto leader in the patch owing to its massive levels of production on both the oil sands and conventional side of the business. Where CNRL goes, others will follow.
“In this environment, Canadian Natural is taking additional actions to further reduce costs and to protect the robustness of the company by implementing a salary reduction of up to 10 per cent for all Calgary and Aberdeen staff,” said the statement from spokeswoman Julie Woo. “The salary reduction is higher for higher salaried individuals.”
Earlier this year, the company said members of its management committee and directors would take a 10 per cent pay cut, while vice-presidents’ salaries would fall five per cent. Woo said the recent additional cuts would also apply to those people.
Between this and the Alberta NDP's increase in personal taxes these guys are taking a huge hit. If the Liberals win the federal election it's an additional 4% on 200. A lot of people making over 125 are really going to get hit by the salary rollback and increase in taxes.

Am I supposed to feel bad about that? I'm having trouble activating my sympathy meter here.

My back of the envelope calc would be for a guy making 350 base + 100 bonus, the higher taxes would only result in a 3% decrease in comp. While the no bonus, wage rollback would be over 33% decrease in comp. So i dont think the raxes are really a huge concern.
On a side note..interesting to see cnrl making the roll backs very ndp-like and progressive. The higher your wage, the higher the percentage rollback.

Yeah... not really. It's 5% from salary between 50k to 100k and 10% for the portion over 100K. That's hardly progressive, and you really had to stretch to work the NDP in to it.

Can confirm this is correct if anyone was questioning.

So the ndp phase in from 10% tax below 125k to 15% tax over 300k.
Cnrl goes from 5% salary reductions below 100k to 10% salary reductions above 100k
Seems similarly progressive to me. Just ironic coming from cnrl...the company taking some of the biggest pot shots against the ndp

FYI the company I was laid off from issued dividends too and I wasn't too butthurt over it. Are people at CNRL somehow more sensitive than normal O&G employees? At least it sounds like they'll still have jobs.

Do you pay federal income tax? Do you understand how tax brackets work? Are you going to call the Conservatives progressive now because of them and tie in the NDP some how? You're really stretching to make some sort of obscure point here.
^ Lol? The salary cuts look to be progressively higher for higher salary brackets... thus, they are progressive? I.e. there is a progression of reductions, from 0%, 5%, to 10%.
No way! Its almost like taxes and tax policies are important to people or something. I cant imagine why...
Obviously, yes. I just meant it would be nice if every thread didn't turn into a political argument when there are a few threads specifically for that.

Oh! So now you're blaming the NDP for derailing threads?
Thanks Notley!
