Yeah, I forgot about him. That's the problem with just looking at guys who got NHL time last season.

The U23 top 3 d-men will do fine against any team, but I think defence and goaltending as a whole will be the U23's weak spots. The forward group should be as good as any, (except Canada of course).
Again, I'd rather no Flames players be on any of the teams to avoid injury/lose focus/etc, but if they are I am likely pulling for the U23s. I wonder if Monahan is captain of the U23s?

Maybe an "A".
I'd give the "C" to the guy with his name on the Cup twice. Saad will also likely be the oldest guy on the team, with a late October 1992 birthday.
Saad with the C and 2 of MacKinnon/Monahan/Hamilton/Nugget for the A's.

We are decided the captain based on being on a good team?

Likely wont matter, but David Musil plays for Czech. Oddly his younger brother decided to play for Canada.

It's not like we're talking about a grinder who was carried by a good team. He was a big contributor on two Stanley Cup winning teams. That's gotta count for something. He probably has more playoff games and points than the rest of the U23s put together.

Obviously more to being a captain than just points. We just speculate on these boards, but who knows how Saad and Monahan really are in the room.
For my money, Monahan seems like a quiet leader, leading by example, as we've seen countless times this year. Especially when Gio went down. When he does speak up, I bet guys listen. Saad playing with Toews though, it's hard to gauge (as a fan) what kinda leadership Saad may have.
Purely as a fan of Mony, it would be cool if he was the C, and then if they won it. He could chirp Gio and Brodie all year long haha.

I don't particularly care who is the captain, but giving Saad the captaincy because he won two cups makes no sense to me as no better than the 6th best player on the team (Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabrook, Sharp/Halmjersson) doesn't strike me as logical.

Gotta base it on something, and they're not Team Canada where they'll have half the captains in the NHL on their roster.
It's not like Saad was just along for the ride in Chicago. He'll likely take on an even bigger role in Columbus this year.

Chia is the GM afterall.
Mony, Johnny, Bennett & Hamilton all actually might be overlooked for the high powered Oiler players.

Not yet. He was drafted in 2011, a week and a half after Boston won the Cup.

The only Oilers options are RNH/McDavid/Nurse.
Who knows what Nurse will do this year and if he will play himself onto the team or not.
I would imagine both RNH and McDavid will be on it.

The NHL/NHLPA held a press conference this morning in Toronto to announce the schedule for the tournament: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=778411
The Young Stars team will officially be called "Team North America", and the age cutoff will be October 1, 1992 birthdays or later (from the list I posted yesterday, Nick Shore is the only one who will be ineligible because of the difference from September 15 to October 1 -- he was unlikely to make the team anyway).
Craig Button has his projected TNA roster here: http://www.tsn.ca/button-s-team-nort...d-cup-1.357583
He includes Monahan, Gaudreau, and Hamilton, but does not include Bennett.
He also projects Matt Murray as the third goalie behind Gibson and Hellebuyck. Murray is a Penguins prospect who put up solid numbers in the AHL last season.
The Groups for the tournament will be:
Group A- Team Canada
- Team Czech Republic
- Team Europe
- Team USA
Group B- Team Finland
- Team North America
- Team Russia
- Team Sweden
There will not be a long medal round. Only the top 2 from each group will move on to the semi-finals. The semis will be single-elimination. The finals will be a best-of-three.
With this structure, it's unlikely the kids will even play against Canada or the States, unless they pull off a major upset.

I think a lot of people here are too young to remember the Canada/World Cup. Play was just as intense as the Olympics.

I'm pretty lukewarm on this tournament. Season is long enough and if a player plays in this tournament and on a team that plays in the cup final that's an awful long season. Also I don't feel the injury risk is worth it for teams that sink or swim with their top players.
The old Canada Cups were great but it's a different time now as players need as much rest as possible in the offseason and we get to see as much hockey as we want on TV whereas in those days you didn't get to see the stars of the game play unless you had season tickets or they were one of the 20 games televised locally or on the odd HNIC Leafs game.
