Default Gas Price Comparison

So, I just happened to be looking at gas prices when I stumbled upon Toronto. How can they be 20¢ a litre less than we are; when the oil comes from Alberta?

http://www.torontogasprices.com/

Andbody know how this can happen? Or are we due to have a price drop right away too?

78.8 at the petro-can on my way to work (in TO)

Two things may be at play - 1- I think there is a bit of a war here right now, the Esso accross the street was at 88.8 at the same time, and 2- Our provincial tax may have been lowered a bit, though I can't find anything in the news about it. Those are the only two things I can think of that would lower prices here.

Don't worry though - long weekend is coming up I am sure the price will go up then.

I think the tax factor is probably a big one, but another thing to think about is that Ontario, Quebec, and the maritimes have about 70% of the refining capacity in the country.

I'm not sure if refineries in the prairies and BC produce enough gasoline for our regional use, but if we don't then it's possible that transportation cost for the gasoline back from Ontario play a role in the price of gasoline on here.

Good point... I think its a combination of that and perceived inflation, specifically, the notion that since Albertans make so much, and things such as houses have increased in value, then other things can inherently cost more. Not exactly good economics, but could be rationalized.

Looks like it has been that way since mid-July

Toronto has had, on average, lower gas prices than us for the last three years, and I'm assuming more than that. I wish we could get some big ass refinery... in Airdrie or something

Thanks for those graphs. I was actually trying to tell a guy at work that our prices are usually about the same, and he says that Toronto is "always cheaper."

I tried to explain that he doesn't pay that close of attention because he doesn't drive, and him going to Toronto for 2 weeks at the begining of summer doesn't make him an "expert."

Gas has been over $1.00/litre for a good long while here in Saint John...and we have one of the biggest oil refineries in North America. I can literally see it from my dining room window...

They are from the site you linked - On the left side "Pump Price Graphs"

I've had the Calgary version of that site bookmarked for a while, and the graphs are interesting.

We should all top of our tanks before Friday. You know that they will jack up the prices for the long weekend.

Ah, but is that gas being sold domestically, or is it being pipelined to the US or shipped over seas.
Could be that the entire production for that refinery is contracted to go somewhere far far away.

Price gouging, and some fixing (collusion) is what I say causes it. Although there have been studies to show that this is not the case, I dont believe them. I just am very suspicious of price fixing at the gas pump.

I paid $0.97/L at the McKenzie Lake Esso last night after being stuck on the Deerfoot for over an hour with my low fuel light on and coasting into the station on fumes.

Should not really be linked to inflation; surely it is liked to the oil price which goes up and down, notwithstanding, inflation. When the oil price goes up little time is wasted when increasing the pump price, BUT when the oil price goes down, it takes forever for the pump price to drop back down. Any way I am sure that this has been discussed and argued here at great length in the past.

Rate of inflation? When I started driving we were paying 39.9 cents/litre in Edmonton. That was in 1996. I'm no financial expert, but I'd say that's a faster climb than inflation.
