I am. This is f%(@% Calgary. If you're driving in the winter, get winter tires. I've said it before, I would support legislation to this effect.

Agree winter tires are a must but even B.C's legislation is a joke. You have to have either the snowflake or 'm&s'. The snowflake signifies winter tires but the m&s is just all seasons with mud and snow capability not a true winter tire with the correct rubber compound. It's that compound that really helps in frozen roads.

Thinking about BFG AT KO2's vs. BFG Rugged Terrain. Sounds like the new KO2's are pretty nice, price difference doesn't seem all that prohibitive.
Obviously not getting the SR A's that I was looking at picking up as takeoffs. Figured they were junk and a few comments and reviews seem to agree. Obviously the BFG's are not winter tires, but they've got the snowflake that you guys seem to LOVE!

Ive had a few sets of the BFG AT. It's a terrific tire, and I've heard the KO2 is even better.

They are 185/60R/15 so 15" I take it?
Also, what is a good WT for an F150? Something that can handle deep snow as I would need them for driving in and out of a cabin.

My comparison would be some sort of Michelin all season mud and snow, firestone, goodyear, etc. This would be 12 months on a 3/4 ton that mostly sees pavement, daily commute on city streets and tows in the spring-fall.

I do fine with my all weathers. They've got the mountain snowflake, and I run them year round.

As long as it's winter rated you're good to go imo. Something like a BFG AT or Duratrac isn't as good as a dedicated winter but at least it doesn't freeze Into a big hockey puck like all seasons do

I've never used all weather tires (for the reasons that I'm about to go into), but they're still not supposed to be suited for places like this. They are supposed to be ideal for urban driving in mild winter climates. In other words, they're more suited to climates like Toronto, rather than extreme cold locales like Calgary. In other other words, if the temperature where you live regularly dips around -15, you should really have actual winter rubber.
But at least legislation requiring the winter-rated status would be a step in the right direction.

I would support it as it would cut down on a lot of needless fender bender accidents at intersections when all seasons can lose their grip while slowing down. People still need to learn to drive better for the circumstances though as there's always a few in a storm that drive like they are invincible.

I would bet you'd see a remarkable reduction in accidents (on the 20% sort of range if not higher), and not just the fender bender sort. This is "seatbelt law" territory, imo.

I think they changed it because it's impossible to find bigger truck tires with a snowflake. The only thing around 35s are duratracs. It was only the snowflake not M&S until last year.

So when do you guys make the switch? Wait until first snowfall?
I'll probably do mine the 1st weekend of October

Hard to get a good load index from the softer compound used for winters. I can't tow as much when my winters are on

Mid to late October. Most years early snow doesn't stick around, but if I see something ugly in the forecast I'll do it then. Depends when I have free time, too.

How many people do their own? I picked up a cheap electric impact gun from Canadian Tire that works really well, got a good deal on a torque wrench and a jack from Costco. For 2 vehicles, it's already payed for itself, and I don't need to juggle getting 2 vehicles to the shop, booking appointments etc.
Quick poll...Thank this post if you do your own.

Absolutely. Can't stand messing around with tire shops. Spend the extra few hundred to have them mounted on separate wheels and you're good to go for a few years. Plus, say there's a big snowfall and I didn't get around to changing the tires. Normally you'd be screwed, but I can quickly do it in under half an hour on my driveway last minute if I need too.
