One theory was exempting food gave the wealthy a much larger tax break than the less wealthy, as they might spend twice as much on groceries, tax free. GST rebates could return the GST portion paid on food, based on need.
This made really good sense to me.
The problem with that is when you're poor, money in your hand goes a lot further than money given back.

In my riding, on a relatively short drive today, I stopped counting at 100 signs for the NDP candidate. As one looks down any long block, one can see up to 5 signs for candidate. In total, I saw 4 CPC sings and not one for the liberal candidate.
I emailed this local candidate and asked if I could expect him to have this much blatant disregard for the environment, as well as maintaining these sort of frivolous spending practices, if they were elected to office.
I expect my only response will come from once again being added to the daily NDP newsletter.
While we're on the topic of signs, I have yet to see any Liberal or NDP signs in my riding (Calgary Shepard). Only signs I see are Tom Kmiec of the Conservative party. He's also personally come to my door to campaign.
I don't vote based off of signs, but to me this shows he's working harder for my vote than the NDP or Liberals are. That won't be the biggest or only reason I vote for him (if I do) but I will definitely be taking it into consideration.

I'm just saying a wealthy family may spend $15k a year on groceries.
The same size poor family may spend $6k.
Therefore, not taxing food is a huge benefit, tax wise, to the wealthy.

Oh totally. Like I said, I'm not totally sold that a consumption tax benefits low-income earners at all.

I've argued here allot before, but I've always viewed a consumption tax as hitting the poor much harder.
Realistically the poor do not save, invest, or collect interest and dividends on their personal holding.
So by allowing the rich to hold onto their taxes until choose to spend it you are creating a large opportunity benefit for them that the poor are unable to take advantage of.
Since the poor need to spend their money on a pay check to pay check basis they must participate in the tax fully right away, while the rich are able to differ the expense. Even if you exempt essentials. I still say a progressive income and/or investment income tax would have a greater balancing effect for society than is possible with a sales tax.
I like the idea of taxing based on disposable income, but the utility of a sales tax is based on the very wrong assumption that the rich dispose of all of their disposable income.

I'm pretty sure the only parties taking my riding seriously are the NDP and Greens.
I've seen a few CPC signs, not a single Liberal sign, and obviously a ton of Green/NDP signs. NDP had the early lead in the sign battle, but there've been lots of Green signs going up the last week. I'd say right now it's about 50/50.
I like the Green strategy of putting the big Elizabeth May/Jo-Ann Roberts combo signs along the riding border. The signs look great and it's a positive association for people in the riding (no matter what people on here say about May). Roberts has a lot going for her, and I could definitely see her taking the riding. Rankin is an okay candidate, but isn't very likable, and people around here really like voting Green these days. I think it turns into a pride thing, like "hey rest of Canada, look at us in Victoria electing Green MPs and MLAs".
Definitely a riding to watch, and certainly the only close race in the country between these two particular parties.

The CBC just ran a short little story about a Conservative candidate in Scarborough. Turns out he was nailed on the show Marketplace in 2012, in a story about home improvement scams. They set up one of those "stings" that are so popular nowadays. You know the kind of thing -- you ask someone to do something, film them with a hidden camera, and watch them be crooks or weirdos or whatever they happen to be.
I don't know if he pulled any real scams, but he did pull something out -- his weiner, so he could take a leak in a coffee cup in a stranger's house, and then throw the offending liquid in the sink. This is on camera, and it ran (I presume) on national TV just a few years ago.
A cursory internet and CBC search didn't pull this story up and it was so weird I might have hallucinated it (it's Sunday, after all). But I hope not, because I'm still snickering about it.
The guy's name last name is "Bance".
EDIT: Even searching Twitter didn't get me very far, though I'm not too good with the Twitting. All I found was one person referring to him as "Pissy Pants Bance" and how maybe he could run the home improvement thing. Also, Jason Kenney spoke at an event for him the other day. This is really taking off!
And I know, I know, if you follow these discussions, you know I'm a liberal/leftie/bleeding heart/hippie or whatever, but I promise that this is bi-partisan snickering. I'd think this was good stuff no matter what party ol' Pissy Pants was running for.
