Default Jet-lagged Ramo lands in Calgary

Quote:
Which begs the question, why re-sign in Calgary?

“Everything is good here,” said the 29-year-old veteran of 122 NHL games with Calgary and the Tampa Bay Lightning (2006-2009). “I don’t know why to not sign here again. We talked at the end of last year that when you get a certain age, it’s not fun to change things around anymore without a good reason. I didn’t feel it was a good enough reason not to sign here.
Quote:
He’s also healthy, too, and that matters.

The last two training camps, Ramo has been injured in some fashion. But, reporting a clean bill of health on Thursday, the six-foot-two, 206-pound product of Asikkala is ready for the year and excited about the changes Flames general manager Brad Treliving made in the off-season.
Excited to see the crease battle play out this year!

hope he can find a new consistent level and take the #1 job straight up. Maybe it's his hair, I'm not sure, but I freaking love Ramo

I like Ramo, I think he has more athleticism than Hiller.

I think Hiller will be traded by November.

I don't love the hair. It's kinda stringy and wiry. Braden Holtby, now he's got good flow.

I like the way Ramo dresses. Those velvet jackets can only be worn by a select few gentlemen. I cannot wear said velvet jacket.

People keep pointing to his age as a reason that he isn't going to get much better than he is, but I still think that he has the talent, work ethic and demeanor to be a really good starting goalie.

Goalies develop rather oddly and Ramo hasn't played a ton of NHL hockey for a guy his age. A healthy Ramo could be a boon for the team this year.

Think Calgary is in a good position. I think Ramo has more potential than Hiller and yet Hiller most likely has more trade value.

I want Hartley to start trading away our excess pieces for draft picks. We have so many young guys coming up.

Edit; Not sure why I said Hartley

Ramo's flaws are coachable ones (correct angles, staying square to the shooter, not being over-aggressive and staying in the net), so I always have hope that he can become more consistent over time. He's always had the skills, but he just needs to refine his approach and develop a consistent gameplan.

I don't know how the goalie position will play out this year, but we have 3 very capable starters ready to go in training camp, so hopefully the competition pushes Ramo even more than Hiller did last year.

I very often wonder at the anomaly of goalie development. It seems to basically be random.

What I've concluded, based solely on just watching different levels of hockey over the years is that the position is tied more to mental confidence than any other position. Goalies need to develop their minds more than other players, and need to train themselves to have short memories; I would say this takes years to perfect and different guys 'hit their stride' at different ages.

Naturally, a good goalie firstly needs to have a good toolbox of reflexes, athleticism and positioning. But so much more is dependent on how he thinks the game, and how he reacts to his highs and lows.

Nor I. They have a bit of a 'Joker-esque' vibe to them.

I'm more confident seeing Ramo in net than Hiller. Hiller can play lights out in one game and get pulled in the next game. He's too hot/cold to be a starter these days. Not sure if the vertigo is to blame, but I view Ramo as the better goalie because of it.

Hopefully another team runs into a goalie injury and ends up trading for Hiller near the start of the year.

Ramo looks like comedian TJ Miller, so it's hard to say his hair and look isn't amazing. I just hope he gets the weird beard to complete the Erlich Bachmann look.

I'm hoping Ramo keeps up his play from the Anaheim series and carries the ball with Ortio behind him.

It sucks because I also really like Hiller.

It sucks because I also really like Hiller.

Got nothing against Hiller but he runs too hot and cold. Early in the season when he put up 50 saves against the Blackhawks for an OT win I loved the guy. But then he follows that up with a couple of real softies. He can steal you game but can also deflate you with a bad goal at a bad time. Even though he had better stats than Karri last year, I also prefer and Ramo - Ortio 1A/1B scenario. Assuming of course Ortio carries over last years play into training camp.

Ramo is far, far more hot and cold.

Ramo has a penchant akin to Reto Berra where he launches himself into outer space (right out of the crease and sometimes into the corner) when he is off his game. Loses his net so badly I wince. That's not to say he isn't awesome when he is on his game but the consistency is an issue for his just as much as the other two goalies if not more so.
