Conny was on the Fan this morning. I only caught the tail end of the conversation about the Gio signing, but he said that the Flames set a certain amount they can spend on players, and thus far (including Gio and Frolik), players have been eager to sign in this city and with this team for those amounts, and they know they could get more elsewhere. Conny specifically said that Gio "made it easy on them" and wanted to be here.

I recall in the Treliving interview that he mentioned last year they started to plan internally on the number for Gio. I knew he was one of the hardest working GM's in the league when he was hired, but you don't really see the hours he pours in prepping and strategizing or networking. He was a hell of a hire by Burke.

When Burke hired him and said he was the only candidate interviewed and that speaks volumes about who he hired I thought he was just trying to boast his own decision making process. Looking back, he was speaking the truth.

And he gives a killer interview, one of the most thoughtful and well spoken Managers I've ever heard.

I do miss Jay Feaster's "I'm smarter than you" vibe though.

Yeah, but Treliving makes you actually believe it.

The most popular names at the time were Benning and Futa if I recall. Treliving was also a name, but I think most people preferred Benning or Futa because they were part of winning organizations, as opposed to Treliving who was part of one of the most dysfunctional organizations (not that this was a reflection of the hockey operations guys).

I have to admit, Treliving was probably the 3rd choice for me based on those 3, but i'm glad I was wrong. I was always intrigued that he was Jim Treliving's son though. He obviously had the genes to be a successful person, but it's not always a guarantee.

Other tidbit from the Conroy interview was style ... Conroy said something like "Tre is always calling the other GMs, while Jay let people come to him"

Hamilton doesn't just come to you.

Explains why many GMs did not even know Hamilton was available.

There was an interview on 960 with Gio's agent. He said Gio pretty much told him to make sure the deal got done.

it's conroy so listen to the whole thing but the gio talk starts around 11:00 mins in

http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/boomer-m...flames-summer/

13:00 mins "Frolik was talking to like...15 other teams"

on gio "we have a number that's what we can afford to pay a guy, and we've stuck to it. if gio wants more....that's a really really tough situation, but we have to do what's best for the organization, but gio made it easy for us, and we got the deal done"

I think a lot of people scoff at the idea of players taking discounts, but I firmly believe they do, and I firmly believe Gio did.

Think about your own careers. Would you move into an unknown situation in a new city for maybe 20% more pay, or stay with your own company for a 10% raise knowing you like the job, there's good people around you and you can move up the corporate ladder (i.e.: the hockey equivalent of winning the Cup)?

I know what I would do.

See, I like this, no wasting time on the pageantry of:

Gio: I want $9M!!
BT: We'll give you $4M!!

And then the endless bickering back and forth.

Its a fair deal and no one is trying to screw anyone. And it sets a great example for the rest of the impending signings.

I agree with that analogy. To me it is more of a "premium" to move to another team rather than a discount, though. For me to move jobs, I would think I would need a 20% bump.

Perhaps a comment better suited to the Glencross discussion, but I think all of those things you listed have value. It isn't a hometown discount as much as the hometown provides something that the other markets can't (right away).

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

The bolded is basically the reason it looks like a discount. I look at it as the player loves the city and the team and wants to stay more than he wants to move and uproot his family, even if it costs him a few million. Having the deal signed a year before his current deal expires was also a significant advantage. Waiting until UFA to sign could've been disastrous if he were to suffer a massive injury or see his play dip... or both.
