One thing I'll say is I definitely felt confused at parts, especially the beginning. I don't know much about the Mad Max story (only previous one I had seen was Beyond Thunderdome as a kid many times - my dad had recorded it on VHS), but I figured that would be good enough background for this one. But the start felt like it was a sequel picking up directly where the last one finished off, to the point where afterwards I was asking people we saw it with if this was a sequel to one that came out a couple years ago or something.
Maybe that was the idea though; appealing to the longtime fans with lots of references to previous films, and enough action and pretty effects to bring in a new generation. Which it did. And it's not like that's a story driven, intricate plot or anything either. But I can't be the only one confused at the start, can I?
Maybe I need to go back to the Mel Gibson era ones and expand it past just Thunderdome before I see the inevitable sequel to this one.

Road Warrior, Thunderdome, and Fury Road all start the same way, dropping into whatever Max is doing at the moment without any regard for any of the prior movies. The only things Fury Road really expect the audience to know going in is that the world is a bad and dangerous place, and there's a loner named Max wandering around in it

This movie didn't have a lot to do with the other films other than the vague Mad Max back story, which is throw back to the original. I thought this Max was a bit of a limp dish rag (but then this movie was made for Charlize). The original Max was motivated by revenge and in Road Warrior he was a mercenary who did things because they benefited him. I was certainly entertained but it was entirely forgettable to be anything other than a good action movie.
I did enjoy the music box nod to Road Warrior though.

Well they are, but if you actually looked at the film from a mens right angle (instead of an anti-feminist angle), The gender roles in the film are really quite misandric.
Essentially the whole film boils down to
Women = Good/Mothers/Builders/Nurturers/Family
Men = Evil/Enslavers/Soldiers...
You get the point.
Even the two male allies the women have are...
Max: Silent, afraid of attachment
Nux: Manchild, likes cars
In fact I'm amazed that it's somehow seen as a "feminist" film. Your average Fast & Furious film has more varied gender roles, and if you want to fight yourself free of the mother-myth, this movie will do you no favours.
Even the female gang is portrayed as family oriented, compared to the more military-like male gangs.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film. I don't see it as the masterpiece many are seeing, but it was a solid 4/5 and quite entertaining.
Personally my main gripes were the mediocre camera work and boring soundscape and soundtrack. Why build the ultimate rock truck with jungle drums and a crazy electric guitar stage, and then build the soundtrack around violin+horn mats? Plus the vehicles look great but they sounded way too much like each other.
I'm also not at all excited to see the copycats... Because what we need most in Hollywood is even MORE caricaturized setups and less attention to dialogue...

Yeah, I didn't get this impression at all. It makes no sense first for the reasons troutman is stating, and also, you cannot travel across the ocean. It is not "salt flats". The ocean floor has topography. If you tried to ride a motorbike across it you'd fall off a several-hundred-foot cliff in fairly short order.
The only explanation I can come up with is that they're still in Australia, and that the "salt" is a desert therein. However, when we're talking about 160 days, you only have enough gas to actually ride the bikes for like, two of those. It's not like you can carry enough gas to travel several thousand KM. So the plan, I guess, was to ride until you run out of fuel, and then hoof it for the remaining five-ish months. Which I agree with Max, is probably a death sentence as I still don't see how anyone is carrying that volume of water.

I'm an unapologetic movie downloader, having a Plex server with an entire digital library just kicks the crap out of physical media, and until there are legal options that are as convenient as torrents I'll have to remain a dirty pirate
But I will be buying the Fury Road blu-ray, my first actual movie purchase in years. It's that good

haha, there are. I've had Fury Road from Google Play for almost 3 weeks now, I'm sure it's been available on iTunes in the same time frame. If you want to steal, steal... but don't pretend it's not super easy to get the vast majority of movies out there digitally nowadays. Especially new releases.

Do the digital releases from Google or Apple stores, or that are included on Blu-rays, need to play in proprietary apps instead of something unifying like Plex? I still buy a lot of Blu-rays, I've just never bothered with the digital copies.

The Google Play price for Fury Road HD is the same as the Blu-Ray price, but you don't actually own it, you have the right to play it through Google services and devices. And it's not the same quality as the Blu-Ray release given the compression they use and the fact that most HD releases are only 720p. Give me the option to buy a DRM-free version on a high quality standard format (like what Louis CK and other comedians are now doing for their shows) and I'll switch

Yeah, all that is true but you mentioned convenience. It's so much more convenient to buy/rent a movie digitally on the day it's released then hunt down a torrent, get it, put it into Plex then stream it. Not saying that is overly difficult but it's super convenient to get movies digitally now. There's no excuse there.
Let's be honest, most of this comes down being too cheap/not wanting to spend money. Free or stealing is always better on the wallet.

Convenience in that case probably means all of the movies in one place. Unless the digital copies from discs all go through the same stores, do they? I really don't know. Do you need to go to a Universal site/app, a WB site/app, and so on? Or do they redeem through your digital store/platform of choice, like Google/Android, Apple, Amazon, Windows? Just curious.
I should redeem some codes for my older Blu-rays if I can and try this out.

No it's not. Torrents can be downloaded and watched in 3 clicks or less than 30 seconds of interaction. DRM free near instant high quality is better than DRM low quality. But whatever, taking to you is always a mistake.

Pretty sure they're all different but yeah it would be nice to have them all free and clear to sort them as you wish. A matching program for various players like Google Music or iTunes does music would be awesome.
Don't mind using Google Play for my movies because I can use them in the Apple ecosystem, unlike ITunes, which I can't get or use on my Android devices.

Getting a lower quality copy is definitely easier, but getting the quality that I want leaves me with buying the Blu-Ray or torrenting. And I'm not trying to argue that the free aspect doesn't enable to me to download a lot more than I otherwise would, but then I look at the comparison to video games. As a kid I pirated a ton of PC games because it was easy and you avoided all the DRM that plagued the retail releases. But then Steam comes along, and eventually it got good enough to change my habits completely. I buy every game I play now because they made a platform that was even better than pirating (automatic game patches, friends list, cloud-synced save files, achievements, etc) at a reasonable cost. If my ideal digital movie store was realized then I'd probably switch my habits to be similar to Steam, buy the stuff I really want right away, then wait for price drops or Netflix for the rest
Anyways though we're completely off topic. My original point is that I'm buying Fury Road because it's the first movie in the last 5 years that made me want to own the physical copy, and anyone who hasn't seen it should too

Speaking of which, you can buy all of the Mad Max movies on Steam.

How does Google play work on a PC? Can you download the file or do you have to stream it?

I got a copy of Mad Max a few weeks ago with very little knowledge about it. I was playing games late and decided I would throw this on and probably just fall asleep watching it anyway. From start to finish the movie was just a roller coaster of action that would not stop, it didn't give me any downtime that would even let me think about sleeping. Great movie and highly recommended.
Edit:
What is the quality of movies on steam? I just looked and they want $15 each for the 3 older movies and I can get the trilogy at Walmart for $4.99 on DVD seems like a no brainer since I'm having troubles finding a couple other ways
