That may be true, but if that were the case then the Bruins should be putting him on LTIR.

I wish our players and management would call the Oilers what they are: just another team on the schedule, no different than a game against Phoenix or Toronto. Calling it a rivalry, even on paper, insinuates that they are an NHL team like us. They're trash and aren't worth wasting words or energy on.

I think this has been the sentiment from both management and coaches. The rivalry is generally brought up by the questioner. I've heard multiple interviews in the summer with both Treliving and Hartley where they were asked pointedly if the Oilers being better helps both teams, and they both essentially answered with you have to treat all games and teams the same as you never know until he season gets going (Flames themselves are proof of that). Usually mention it would be better for the fans, but for the team, it makes no difference.

To my eyes Gio has been playing at an elite level for the past two seasons while getting a 4 million annual salary, which he'll get this season as well. Combine that with his new contract and Mark gets around 5.8 million average annually over nine years. I won't be pulling my hair out and decrying this signing if he isn't elite during the last two seasons of his new deal. And yes, in some cases I do agree with paying someone a little extra for past accomplishments, especially in this case.

So in other words, adding McDavid looks great on paper but let's see how the Oilers perform on the ice.

Hate to say it but the same goes for the Flames. Adding Bennett, Frolik, Hamilton looks great on paper but let's see how the Flames performs on the ice.

what do you mean how it looks on the ice? The Flames have for the most part the same team as last year that made it to the second round of the playoffs and the oilers have for the most part the same team that drafted first overall. The Flames have nothing to prove, the oilers have to prove their even an NHL team before they can have an actual NHL rival.

Well, let's see. Bennett jumped into NHL competition at the most competitive time of the year and looked pretty good. I'd say he has shown that he can play at the NHL level.

Frolik has played over 500 NHL games and shown that he can at any rate be a decent second-line forward.

Hamilton has shown that he can be offensively productive and defensively responsible while playing tough minutes for Boston.

McDavid has shown that he can score a hat trick in a summer-camp scrimmage.

As they say on Sesame Street, one of these things is not like the others.

I agree, but the point they are trying to make is that chemistry and what not plays a big role in this. We were all excited when we nabbed Jay-Bo and we all know how that turned out lol

Chemistry is not a question for the Flames in the way that it is for the Oilers. The Flames have terrific chemistry and are hoping that the new players won't damage it. (We already know Bennett won't.) The Oilers have about the worst chemistry in professional sports and are hoping that McSweetness and Light can magically fix it.

Again, the Sesame Street rule applies.

Same thing with the Bouwmeester example.

We added a quiet player, from a culture of losing, to a dressing room that was already poisonous and filled with issues hoping it would work.

The Flames are adding a couple of players from winning cultures (Frolik-Chicago/Winnipeg; Hamilton-Boston) to a team with a strong culture and leadership core.

That is exactly it. Dougie and Ashton Kutcher are coming into a team on the upswing with a great attitude.

JayBo was coming into a team that was clinging to the hopes of yesteryear.

The thing is we don't have Brent Sutter as coach and a roster way past it's best before date

Are you giving form tips to a professional athlete who has professional trainers working with him?
