Canadians do. I've seen racism come from visible minorities to white people and from white people to visible minorities. It goes both ways and I think has more to do with ignorance. I'm married to a woman from Pakistan and some of her male familys attitudes towards women is pathetic.

Don't worry. Even though women are treated like chattel in many cultures, subject to rape, abuse, and murder, my wife and I both agreed that it wasn't a hate crime. These guys were just creepy losers. The best we could do was inform the police on one of the occasions that my wife had been harassed, and in all three cases, stop using that particular business.

Did your wife file a complaint with the taxi company? Fill out a police report? You said it yourself, she was harassed did you or your wife file a police report for harassment? I highly doubt a cabbie would risk their job and livelihoods just to berate your wives. Once maybe, but three times? Where are these people you guys encounter? Never encountered anything like that in my life once let alone 3 times.

And? It's not like we can't do better in actually prosecuting race crimes in addition to the implementation of hate crimes. I happen to think laws should perform a dual purpose by both protecting people and influencing social norms. The normative position enforced by hate crime legislation is "you ought not to assault someone based on their race, gender, sexual-orientation, etc." That seems to me to be an acceptable norm to impose upon society.

Why not "you ought not to assault someone?" Makes more sense.

They already do that. But it's even worse if the reason you're doing it is cause of their skin color, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation...etc.

Men's attitude towards women in general is pathetic. We live in an extremely sexist era and just because "they" are worse does not mean we are better.

This incident is clearly a great opportunity to start discussing sexism in Pakistan right? What does that have to do with this girl (and the ###### in the passenger seat) getting all racist towards this particular cabbie?
Are you guys seriously trying to backhandedly excuse this kind of garbage?
Were these people defending your wives from harassment?

No one is defending them. That is ridiculous.

So why the "me too" victim posts? They are unrelated to this incident.
Those incidents should be reported on their own terms.

What I was trying to do was challenge the notion that hate crimes are somehow specific to certain groups or circumstances, but are rather just crimes.

Or you made it up to strengthen a pretty weak argument. Like the poster above said, one taxi driver being sexist and racist does not give everyone a free for all pass to berate other taxi drivers. Your stories about your wife is irrelevant to the issue.

I happen to think we live in the least sexist culture and era in history. But I'm willing to be educated.
And sorry, "worse" and "better" matter. Degrees of things matter. The world isn't binary.

We have that as well. They can't exist together? We have an issue where people assault other people based on their race. You don't address that by glossing over it and lumping it with other crimes because it shares all the same features except that aspect.

It seems that by having both, you weaken the overall purpose of the law, which is to be just. You can't have two standards.

I definitely agree but we have a long way to go. All I'm saying is we have to look in the mirror sometimes. We are quick to point over seas into another country yet the issues of how women are treated in North America are largely ignored.

Technically 'race' is a made up concept and really means nothing scientifically. From Bill Nye:
http://bigthink.com/think-tank/bill-...cial-construct
Quote:
The same can be said for humans. Race, just like breed, is a human construct:"If a Papua New Guinean hooks up with a Swedish person all you get is a human. There’s no new thing you’re going to get. You just get a human. Japanese woman jumping the African guy, all you get is a human. They’re all humans. So this is a lesson to be learned. There really is, for humankind there’s really no such thing as race. There’s different tribes but not different races. We’re all one species."
