This wouldn't even be allowed.

When he got the "C" he took that honor very seriously and stepped his game up considerably. He is definitely a key reason the rebuild has gone so well and quickly.

Some of us thought he was a lot more than a solid top 4. But that is not the point.
You quoted handgroen's post about Giordano being a difference between the two rebuilds. And he was exactly right.
Many Flames fans argued that a naked, scorched-earth rebuild is a bad way to go about it. That leadership, and mentorship (teaching the kids how to be pros), and culture are vital.
Here we are a few years later and what do we have? In Calgary, a bunch of solid young prospects on a team with great leadership and great veterans, where the kids are learning the right way, and a solid culture has been established. And in Edmonton, a team that has been lost in the darkness, with no leadership, no accountability, and no growth, for years and wasted years.
Giordano isn't the entire difference. But he IS the poster child for the difference between the two teams.

But the rationale is that Gio is getting 9x4 with 2 victory lap years as a 38-39 year old d man making 6.75 but earning 2M with change.
There are absolutely NO 38-39 year old d-men worth 6.75 M.
Chara is 38.... is he worth more than 2-3 M for this coming season?

It doesn't matter what the rationale is, it is against the rules.
The rationale was that Kovalchuk would be worth 1 million at 75 years old too.

Depends on if hes injured or not, he had a terrible year last season, but if hes healthy hes likely worth it.

What are you arguing?
Everyone knows what the rationale is, but it doesn't matter because there are rules in the CBA to prevent that.

Every single team in the league would happily take Chara for $3M this season.

For those worried about Gio's effectiveness at towards the end of his contract, I would argue there is a little more tread on the tire compared to some players. Combination of injuries, playing in minors, Russia has resulted in fewer NHL games played compared to some. And as we know, he has yet to play through any long playoff runs. Seems likely he could carry his strong play later in his career. He certainly has been a bit of a late bloomer.
As for the whole "sacrifice" argument. That is not a term I would use in this case. A wealthy person donating 10 to 20% of their earnings to charitable causes is not making a sacrifice IMO. They are being generous. Perhaps its just semantics.

I would argue that with the Cap heading ever-up, in 4 or 5 years time Gio's 6.75MM will be very tradeable to a team looking to get over the hump or make a playoff push at the deadline.
I think this contract is great for both parties. It gives the Flames flexibility, and Gio gets term and very decent dollars. Treliving is the best.

I'm actually not too worried about Giordano's play in 2020 as I feel pretty confident there will be another round of compliance buyouts the next time the CBA is revisited. Hopefully it never comes to that but I feel the Flames should be protected either way.

Yes, also they have the option to trade him in year 5/6 to 20 teams in the league. If they retain half it's a 3.375m cap hit with maybe 2.5m owed in real dollars, sounds pretty movable to me. The ONLY way this contract is an issue is if Gio devolves into a 6/7 guy who gets injured during buyout windows and I really don't see that happening.

I'm pretty sure the only reason Lindstrom retired was because the NHLPA said it was unfair for all other defensemen because they didn't have a shot at the Norris.
Gio will win the Norris before this contract ends.

Most teams would take a healthy 38 year old Chara at his full $6.9M.

Treliving was just on Toronto Lunch. Not exact wording here.
About Giordano deal - he's our best player and captain
- would have been Norris winner or finalist if not injured
- he's a good living and conditioning player
contracts in general
age- biggest killer is term - you never know for sure how it will turn out
back to Giordano - we expect 3 to 5 years of top playing and even after he'll be useful
about Jones - Hudler - Russell -(Wideman?)
- can always find a way to get things done with an outstanding player but you can't keep everyone
- get into camp to see how everything fits (sounds like he's pretty much done as for new contracts of pending UFAs)
Avoid fallback from Flames great season
- made a nice step but will now have a bit of a bulls eye on us.
two ways to improve
- add from outside (Frolic and Hamilton)
- young players improve and are added
- maintain identity
Asked about Alberta rivalry
-it would be great but so far it's just on paper
This was what I remember but not exact by any means.

The problem is, I don't think Chara will ever be 100% healthy again. His knee is wrecked.
