I'm going to go way out on a limb and say that, based on what Treliving has done so far, that the contract will be a good midpoint for the club and for Gio.

My guess is 5 or 6 years at $7M per. Something like 9M, 9M, 7M, 5.5M, 4.5M.

Is there a rumour that a deal is done?

I think the rumour might have originated here. Apparently Giordano signed but they're waiting until Gio gets in town?

But aren't you MarkGio himself? Shouldn't you know if you signed or not?

I really hope it's under $7 million. His inevitable drop off will be soul crushing if it is any higher.

More likely that BT is on his vacation when he should be negotiating / announcing contracts. What a slacker

Also speculation there will be no announcement until all parties are in Calgary and available for the presser.
Just an FYI for those interested.

Looks like Tranny's source proves out as true.
Well done and another scoop for Calgarypuck.

Anyways, I took a look at the five players' last six years production. Salary numbers are for the next four seasons, so 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18- and 2018-19 and in Chara's case he expires in 2018.
Code:
Player GP Points PPG +/- Salary Average Post-CBA?
Gio 397 210 0.53 27 ? ? Yes
Keith 444 287 0.65 85 23 5.75 No
Doughty 443 240 0.54 55 29.8 7.45 No
Chara 428 219 0.51 124 16 5.33 No
Suter 438 235 0.54 63 36 9.00 No
I think you can argue that Gio's production was very similar, the "pedigree" or "durability" not so much.
On average, the salary of those four players comes down to 6.9 Million.
I think that's exactly what Gio is worth for the next four years.
He makes 4M next year, so to get him in line with that value you'd have to eat an average value of 7.9M for the three years after.
Adding a two more years of term @ 6M to drop the cap hit and you're right back down to around 35M / 5 years.
I think that's the contract we need to sign Gio to. AAV of 7M
|
I said 7M @ 5Y.
6.75 @ 6Y I guess, is one year longer but the AAV is just right.

By the way, Giordano said the reports a couple of months ago that he was looking for an eight-year deal worth $9 million per season were not close to the truth. (That said, his deal is worth around that in Canadian dollars thanks to our floundering loonie.)
“When I saw that I thought, ‘Wow, that’s way off,’ but it happens and I understand,” Giordano said. “I had to downplay it to my buddies and my family.”
|
Gio says those rumors were flat out false, and I believe him. I guess Kypreos and his sources really are idiots.

EDIT: Maybe when he "saw" the rumor, he saw it on CP? Maybe he took our opinions into consideration when signing!

If fans of the game wish to support these salaries with the totally unreal ticket prices, so be it! But if you come into dire straits for some reason or other, don't look for these boys to bail you out! Are they contributing any of this huge salary to the new arena complex?? doubt it!
