Like everything on these shows, that was staged.
Note how he dials his phone.

Samantha Bee's new show will be on TBS in January...

No other details are available at this time. Will it be a half hour or hour long? Will it be daily or weekly? Will it use the Daily Show structure or be a more traditional talk show (or something else)? Will it air before or after Conan?

Maybe it will grow on me over time but I enjoyed pundit Colbert over Late Show Colbert.

Colbert's band is beyond cheesy. There is more going on in the corner than What's Up With That? on SNL.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the band leader. It also seems weird that he doesn't get to chat or say anything. All the other guys make some small chat with the band.

Those opening sweeping tilt shift shots of New York were incredible.

Stephen is great, first night was rough but he'll get there. He brings dimensions to late night that no current host has. Smart, bookish, charming and utterly quick.

Hope he keeps the monologues short and goes right for the desk bits.

Yeah, I loved the tilt shift intro. Very good use of that effect.

For some reason, the stage looked a lot smaller than it did when Dave was there.

Loved the Clooney interview with the clips of his fake movie

The first show was a bit scripted, and I'm sure it will be great when Colbert can be looser. You rarely got to see him break up and laugh when he was playing the Colbert Report character. It is a bit awkward how he is much more popular to his audience than big stars like Clooney.

But that band, yikes - Batiste prancing around with a Melodica. A New Country cowboy with a tambourine. A guy playing saxophone on top of the piano. They seem like session musicians that would have no qualms about going on tour with Justin Bieber or Shania Twain.

Batiste has quite the resume though:

Stay Human:

Suppose I should give them a chance - maybe they were a bit too hyper for the first show.

Colbert used his remarkable control and poise not for comedy, but rather to honestly engage the former governor on issues of bipartisanship and education. The only sign of confusion between these differing sides of his personality and his show was the faint laughter inspired by a non-kidding aside—“or what passes for governing now”—during one of his questions. If Colbert is to appear a true alternative to his competitors at NBC and ABC—neither of whom is likely to ask Jeb Bush where his brother’s presidency went wrong (apparently it was the fiscal policy near the end of the second term)—his Late Show will be defined by moments like these.

There are always some growing pains when new hosts take over. It takes them a while to make it their own.

I'm not a huge fan of these kinds of shows to start with and haven't liked Letterman since the mid-90s, so unless they got all new writers and staff, I probably won't bother with Colbert either.

^I believe it is a different staff than Letterman.

I thought the show was pretty good. Definitely better than a Fallon show. The two guests were interesting and funny. Wasn't Kendrick supposed to be the music guest?

Would have liked to see a standup comedian on the show as well

He's on tonight with Scarlett Johanssen and Elon Musk.

I believe Colbert took most of his staff from the Report with him. A lot of Dave's staff had been with him for years and were just sticking around waiting for him to retire.

Just watched it, and thought it was pretty good. Slow start, but he got quite comfortable once he was behind the desk.

I liked it. You an take the Colbert out of the report, but you can't take the report out of Colbert.
