Disgusting. Legal? Sure. Ethical? Nope.

I knew a couple guys that did this several years ago. I am sure they wished they had the option to pay a mere $20, instead they had to show up to court for trespassing charges. This caused them to miss a days pay and pay a fine on top of it all.

If this money went to the band and was directed by the band it's reasonable. If it's guys on the reserve trying to make a buck then I think it's unreasonable and essentially just a bribe.

Yeah it's trespassing. Unless they weren't aware of where they were, they're lucky they didn't get officially fined.

You couldn't pay me $20 bucks to drive through a reserve.

It's still trespassing if you don't know you're trespassing. -- Anyway....mighty neighborly of 'em. Mighty neighborly.

Fairly petty move given the circumstances. It's not like they wanted to detour, they were forced to. Pretty pathetic they couldn't just let them drive through, it would've been the decent thing to do.

Ok wait what? It's trespassing to be on a reserve?

I grew up not far from Hobbema (Maskwacis) and have taken 2A through there 500 times.

I'm guessing that taking the provincial highway is not trespassing, but what sbout stopping for some indian tacos at burger baron?

It wasn't on the 1A or the paved road through Morley. It's an unpaved road that ends up in Cochrane on George Fox Drive or whatever it's called. With the ridiculous paving issues, I'd normally be quite happy to give them $20 to cut through there. But, this was all kinds of exceptional circumstances - the paving backups, then the fatal accident and a few hours later, while the EB lanes were still closed, another accident in the near vicinity on the other side (another rig rollover from what I read) - it was a horrible day and it was a time to cut everyone a break. Not make a buck. It's unfortunate these 2 people acted this way.

Nah, not at all, I'd call it smart thinking. Good on them for seeing an opportunity and acting on it. I hope they made bank.

The people who jack prices on basic necessities during disasters are also just "seeing an opportunity and acting on it". But we call that gouging, and it is illegal.

This instance is much like Uber jacking rates in Australia for people fleeing that attack/hostage taking in downtown Sydney last year. It may not be illegal, but in both cases, it makes you a petty piece of garbage.

So this was 2 random guys extorting $20 from everyone? What would stop another guy from extorting another $20 a block or mile down the road? Then another $20 further down, etc?

You can't turn around without being charged again.

I'm glad I don't carry cash.

Was there another option? The article is vague, it sounds to me like some people cut through there rather than to take the approved detour.
