For perspective, Floater McFloaty in Edmonton got a 6x6, so did The Tenderness.
Gio at 6x6.75M is a great deal for the Flames, but fair. Gio's not 23 anymore, but he is elite RIGHT NOW, and you need to pay him for that.
Very refreshing to hear Treliving talk about Gio understanding that you need cap space to sign the up and comers like Mony & Gaudreau.

Yeah, by "we" I meant hockey in general not the Flames.
Anyways, my only argument is that comparing pure stats across eras is pointless to do. You wouldn't just say "Gretzky had 200 points so he's better than Crosby"... I'd want to hear a more useful argument.

I think Flames top scorers is probably a better metric for the degree of higher scoring than top scorers in the league

I would say the best metric for degree of higher scoring, is league average GPG and SA/G
1987-88 - 3.71 GPG
2014-15 - 2.73 GPG
Could spend days analyzing all the different factors though and still get nowhere though - whatever Gio ends up with will be a hell of an accomplishment relative to his own era.

No one was making an argument of which defenseman was best. The discussion was whether Giordano would set the all-time records. He won't. But no one's saying or arguing that Giordano's an inferior defenseman.

Was a little worried the Gio contract might get out of hand in rewarding him for past play, but then you just have to: #TrustInTreliving.
Fair deal for both sides - well played, Brad and Gio.

Have to like the deal...from every aspect. I figured he would get 40 million but I thought it would be over 5 years, so essentially he is playing free for a season.
Treliving is quickly becoming an elite GM.

Great deal. I'm just glad that Gio is staying overall.

I was kind of thinking Giordano would sign for something like 49M over 7 years, so this deal is both cheaper and shorter than I was expecting.
It's possible that Giordano still ends up being overpaid, but it sure seems like a solid summer for Treliving. I think if you bet against 5+ year extensions to early 30's players, you'll be right more often than wrong but in the context of current market, that is a better deal than I was thinking it might take.

Not sure if mentioned earlier, but does this stand to reason it lines up with the rumour you heard a week or so back?

I said super durable this year. Meaning he took some heavy contact and never got injured this year.

Anyone who thinks Giordano has only had 2 really good years, needs to read this article...

People say that Giordano has only been playing at an elite level for two years. Doesn't mean he wasn't good before.

when you compare the flames and oilers rebuilds, gio is the major outlier and biggest thing the oilers are lacking.
it's such a luxury for the flames, that even despite great talent and leadership qualities from young guys like monahan, there is absolutely no question who the leader and captain of this team is.
the poor oilers have to decide who is the leader of their team by default.
hall or mcjesus? who will better cope with having the captaincy thrust upon them?
it's the reason why the age of the player shouldn't put a damper on this signing; players of this age are good for the dynamic of a young team, and a complete absence of elite veterans can create a leadership void.

Pretty much...yup.
In my discussion money was mentioned but I was never going to post it as there was no way to confirm it, but this was almost bang on what was said.
I thought from day 1 it would be more however, so I was pleasantly surprised and wrong.
