For those that are worried about the length of the deal, it's really not a big deal. In the 4th - 5th - 6th years if he declines significantly and the Flames need to trade him to free up his cap hit, there will always be a team that is needing to reach the floor that could use him for leadership purposes. The return might not be awesome, but it would be possible. Instead we have him at least for the next 4 years while he is likely going to be a top tier D-man and come to that bridge when we get there.

His dollars also help to insure that the Flames will have the best opportunity to compete for the cup over the next 4-5 years as well. If the Flames can keep Hudler for 5.5-6.5 over the next few years as well, then that would be huge in the leadership department.

We will only need to cycle out a bunch of the higher dollar contracts that are currently on the team. Guys like Raymond, Smid (May become an IR case like Savard/Pronger), Engelland, Jones, Hiller, Ramo, Stajan, Bollig, Russell and Wideman could all be moved and their dollars re-allocated. That's 3, 3.5, 2.9, 4, 4.5, 3.8, 3.125, 1.25, 2.6, and 5.25 respectively that could be re-assigned. Only Russell, Jones and the two goalies are UFA, so that's 14.9 million that could be allowed to walk, which would cover the extensions of Gaudreau, Monahan, Gio, and Hudler with some $ left over (assuming that Gaudreau + Monahan get 4.5 million dollar raises each, and Hudler gets a 2 mil bump).

The good thing is that we have plenty of forwards, defensemen and goalies ready to make the jump. Ortio and Gillies could easily step in next year and be the goalie tandem, Morrison will likely be on the full time roster at some point this year, with Spoon being another candidate, never mind the whole group of potential forwards like Arnold Klimchuk Poirier etc.
This is the key - having players on low dollar contracts producing better value returns. And yes, the Flames have lots of them coming

Probably not?

He needs 147 goals to and 577 points to reach Al MacInnis. Really doubt he has an average of 20 goals and 82 points over the next 7 years.

Besides the games played by a blueliner it'll be an uphill battle for most of these.

Not a snowballs chance. Al MacInnis;

3rd in All-Time Flames Games Played (803)
3rd in All-Time Flames Points (822)
1st in All-Time Flames Points Among Defensemen
1st in All-Time Flames Assists (609)
4th in All-Time Flames Power-Play Goals (102)

Agreed but in fairness, there's some era difference to account for. When MacInnis played multiple guys would be looking at 150+ point seasons while last season we didn't even have a 100 point player.

This is a good day, I like this a lot and I think it will set a precedent in the locker room too when it comes to negotiating contracts. This bodes well for when Johnny and Sean need to be signed to a new contract.

Chalk one up for BT again, great job by Burke and Co. getting this guy.

While he did play in an era with more goals, that is a gross exaggeration.

Most Points in each of MacInnis's years as a Flame
1983-84: Kent Nilsson - 80
1984-85: Kent Nilsson - 99
1985-86: Dan Quinn - 72
1986-87: Joe Mullen - 87
1987-88: Hakan Loob - 106
1988-89: Joe Mullen - 110
1989-90: Joe Nieuwendyk - 95
1990-91: Theo Fleury - 104
1991-92: Gary Roberts - 90
1992-93: Theo Fleury - 100
1993-94: Robert Reichel - 93

Let's not cheapen what MacInnis accomplished because we all love Giordano. Plus there's one more record I want Gio to shoot for:

Most Conn Smythe Trophies as a Flame: Al MacInnis - 1

He should pass Regehr on the all-time games played list without a problem, even though it will still be 4 seasons away (assuming no major time lost due to injury).

If he plays out the full length of this contract, plus next season, with zero games missed, he'll be only the second player to ever play 1,000 games with the Flames. Even then, he'll still be over 100 games behind Iginla on the all-time Flames list.

That late tying goal against St. Louis was awesome! Came right before Christmas and sent us into the break on a high note (as he did this year also with the OT goal against LA)!

The thread on HF is full of Treliving love and every now and then you read a hater post. Every user name that hates has "Mc" in the user title which is something it appears the Oilers fans have done on that site.

This organization has come so far since the 2013 season where they offer sheeted RoR, and got owned on both the Iggy and Bouw trades. Treliving and Burke have restored this organization as one of the best run in the league. The Glencross, and Hamilton trades then the Brodie, Hamilton, Frolik, and Giordano signings are all huge wins

I think the poster was referring to 150 point scorers league wide, not on the Flames.

I loved Chopper and he was a great player for us, but he did play in an era of higher scoring. Gio will never catch him in scoring and he likely wont end up with as highly regarded a career.

But no Flames has won the Norris trophy. Gio has a chance for the next few years.

Other than games played (which he should set, as discussed), and OT goals, which he is already leading, I could see Giordano winding up second in most categories. Current totals for second:

Goals: 128 (Suter), Giordano needs 63 more in 7 seasons (9/season)
PP Goals: 54 (Suter), Giordano needs 25 more (~4/season)
Assists: 436 (Suter), Giordano needs 258 more (~37/season)
Points: 564 (Suter), Giordano needs 320 more (~46/season)
Shots: 1739 (Suter), Giordano needs 807 more (~116/seaso)
GWG: 21 (Phaneuf), Giordano needs 13 more, or 14 to be #1 all-time (2/season)

That makes sense. Got thrown by the "we". Still...not sure that Gretzky getting 200 points really helped MacInnis get his. I think Flames top scorers is probably a better metric for the degree of higher scoring than top scorers in the league

Superfraggle, your post might be as misleading as GranteedEV's was.

In 1988, MacInnis was 6th on the Flames with 83 points.

In 2015, that would have made him 4th in the entire league

Fantastic number per year. Fantastic term on the contract.
I like that this is a deal that helps the Flames, Gio & his family.
Clearly Gio took a cut on what he could got elsewhere which just make you admire his leadership as a Captain even more.
Gio helped allow the Flames to be more competitive with the next round of extensions coming to the Flames young talent moving forward.

Was just trying to point out that other players on other teams getting 150 points is hugely misleading. I agree that the stats I threw out there aren't the best measure either. It was quick and easy to pull and made more sense when I thought he was referring to the Flames not having a 100 point scorer this year. This is not the hill I would like to die on.
