Default Windshield Replacement Recommendations?

I was recently pelted with gravel from a truck and my windshield has a long horizontal crack that's not salvageable.

Unfortunately, I have an older Mercedes and the glass is rain-sensing (and possibly other features) so I sense this won't be a cheap repair. Going to the dealership is not an option because I know it will be the most expensive option.

Does anybody have any recommendations for an auto-glass replacement place that could handle something like this and is reliable and affordable?

Cal-Alta.

They're awesome. Really inexpensive (I paid $200 bucks with some canned food donations) and I had great service and got in the next day after my windshield was smashed.

Windshield surgeons by Chinook. My mechanic recommended them. $500 installed and OEM glass. Did a great job too. Was quoted $1400 from Crystal Glass and $1500 from the Porsche dealer. A few other CPers have gone there too and can vouch.

Thanks, it looks like they are still doing the food drive promo for $100 off. I will take that price and compare it to some other quotes. Did you go to the North or South location?

I went to the south location. I was a little sketched leaving my car overnight there since it wasn't the nicest location but all was well. I was impressed how good of a job they did cleaning all of the broken glass I had every where (my windshield was smashed by something flying on Deerfoot).

2nded for Cal-Alta. Best option around, really affordable windshield replacement and very friendly. The groupon promo also was great to use.

Cal-Alta. Promised I would give them a shout out if this topic ever came up. I used the groupon promo at the Horton Rd location. My groupon was expired, but they still honoured it. In addition, I had to wait an extra hour due to the workload that day and they have me an extra $50 off. I'll definitely go back if I ever need another service done.

Windshield Surgeons called me and told me to shop around to make sure I get the best price because inventory/prices are different.

That's pretty cool in my books. I'm going to check out both them and Cal-Alta.

It appears there are too many possible fancy features in my glass (rain sensor, IR/laser blocking, compass, etc.) so nobody is sure what part number they are looking for unless I bring it in first.

I go to Cal-Alta and they're great. They also price match so if you shop around and find a lower price elsewhere just let them know and they'll match it

I would also recommend Cal-Alta. I haven't had a windshield replaced there but I visit them about 4 to 6 times a year to get chips repaired. They are a great shop. I believe they also provide free chip repairs when you get a new windshield from them.

Another vote for http://www.calaltaautoglass.ca/south-location/, they even accepted out of date Groupon deals.

Never had an issue with them. Used them since 2005.

the last few times i had my windshield replaced, i paid extra for the "diamond" coating on it. This coating really repels the water and i went crack free for almost 2 yrs (and i drive on deerfoot a lot).

this coating is availible at kings glass and glassmasters and both shops are across from each other in the hot tub district on 1st by macleod.

How much extra was this coating? My glass has little pin-head sized chips all over the place (2008 model) from years of road gravel but this is the first time I've had major cracks. Does the coating do well to repel all the tiny dings as well?

Cal Alta North. We use them for glass and R&I of glass I have probably sent them 100+ Vehicles this year so far. They don't break windshields that need to be saved and they don't break tricky quarter glasses. Their prices are extremely fair when it comes to windshield replacements. Alot of the smaller guys buy their glass from them and go out and do installs.

Last windshield replacement I went to Crystal Glass on 9th Ave SW downtown (huge mistake, should have gone to Cal-Alta apparently).

Took some large chips out of the paint on my Audi, which they paid to have fixed, but still a pain in the arse.

Glass, while a good brand, is terribly brittle to boot and will need replacing next year likely.

A thousand downvotes to Crystal Glass downtown.
