If possible, we shouldn't burn any ELC years out of the latter two, which is a serious possibility because they're such high-end prospects.

Scratch number 1 off the list...
5 Trade Targets to Improve Oilers Defense
At first glance you can’t possibly believe Brad Treliving and the Flames will let a high-calibre home grown top-pairing talent like Giordano walk and hit the market next year but the Flames will be in tight to get a number of key players re-signed next summer.
The entire top-line of Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Jiri Hudler will be looking for new deals not to mention the team only has five forwards signed through the 2016-17 season. Even worse neither Jonas Hiller or Karri Ramo have deals past this season. The Flames will be up against it to get everyone re-signed and Giordano might price himself out of the Flames future plans.

The term is a year too long and cap hit 750K per higher than my WILDEST dreams of what this contract would look like. Amazing deal by Brad getting the heart and soul locked up until he is 38 under $7M.
Trelving has proven to be an incredible hire by Burke. In 2 short drafts he added 2 core young pieces moving forward. Bennett was a layup but stealing Dougie was amazing management. Then signing out top 3 D to long term deals at a cap hit of less than $6M per from 16/17-19/20 and less than $5M per for the upcoming season.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Russell and Hudler as those are tough decisions. I have no doubt we will see great contracts next summer for Johnny and Monahan

You don't need to go full Jesus to make a sacrifice. In relative terms, taking less than $7M is a big deal.

Looks like a good price. Might be an issue in year 6, but who knows what the cap will be at that time, or how far off Gio will be from where he is right now. To me, this seems like the less risky of any other alternative.
All I know is that I'm looking forward to the start of the season.

Yeah but the denominator goes up by 2 as well.
The cap is calculated as 50% of HRR / # of teams
Unless the expansion teams generate more than average revenue, they won't increase the cap. And if they generate less than average, they would actually bring the cap down.

Great signing. It's easy to just look at the numbers, but the human element / professional element is HUGE here too.
The Flames didn't dick-around their leader and captain. That in part is why UFAs and RFAs are more likely to come to Calgary and more likely to leave some money on the table. They will be treated properly and everyone in the organization: Top-to-Bottom -> is committed to doing what it takes to win.
To me, that "Extra year" of term will pay for itself over-and-over again by way of stability of the franchise, dignity / respect paid to the captain, internal salary cap on some of the young guys and the message is sends to every other NHLer out there.
The short-term, medium-term and long-term outlook for this team is extremely exciting!

Wasn't Dowbiggen on the fan yesterday trying to suggest that the Giordano contract was likely still an issue?
It's a good deal for Giordano, he's busted his arse to get to where he is, so I don't mind seeing a guy like that get a few dollars. The dollars and term are both workable I think so I'm okay with it.

To be fair that was said before Giordano turned into an elite NHL player.
Still hilarious with hindsight though.

This deal is absolutely fantastic.
Put it this way:
Mark Giordano makes less money than Dion Phaneuf and only $1M more than Dennis Wideman.
Home. Run.

That would directly contradict what Boomer reported a couple weeks back.
I did hear him say though that he thinks Ken King and Nenshi can't work together and this is why the project was presented the way it was.

I think when determining the quality of a contract one shouldn't put it in comparison to bad contracts... that just makes it "not bad" as opposed to demonstrating any fantastic-ness.
