Giordano extension is flat $6.75M for all 6 years of contract. $2M signing bonus in years 1 and 2.

Not a big deal really. But I do think some front loading would have been wise. Thats all tikky tacky stuff though.

Wait, you don't think that in 5-6 yrs the league average salary will be higher.

I think that he will still be marketable. He doesn't play a style that is hard on his body and, other than his arm, has had a pretty good injury free career to date.

If he's even just a decent top 4 guy in 5 years it won't be an overpayment assuming the cap goes up a bit during that time. When I see how much guys like Orpik are making, I think we made out like bandits here. Literally the best possible outcome, any lower and Gio would've balked IMO.

With this contract, Gio now has the longest/biggest contract in Calgary Flames history. Surpassing Kipper's 6y/35mil contract in 2008.

Not sure why this would be a worry. Both Ramo and Hiller have 1 year left each. Barring an extension, they are both gone next off season (and one of them probably traded long before then). There is absolutely no rush for Ortio to grab the #1 spot this upcoming season.

Why? Russell is on the last year of his deal, but then Wideman and Smid are both going into their final year...

Amazing how some people can't grasp the concept of two parties negotiating
$72 million down to $40 million isn't a negotiation. It's an entirely different conversation.

There were 6 d-men 31 and older out of the 26 getting Norris Trophy votes.

There were 3 older than the age Gio will be when this contract starts.... Kronwall 34 and Campbell 35 and Markov 36.

Gio has been injured for significant periods the last 2 years... There has only been 3 seasons out of his 8 where he has played a normal 90%+ of the games .

Iginla for comparison missed more than 8 games twice in his 18 year career....

Totally bad comparison.

It might be buried in one of the first few pages, but is there any news of a NTC for the contract? I know its sacrilegious to think of trading Gio, but we could end up with a Brian Campbell situation near the end of this contract.

You do realize that the initial ask was in USD too, right?

I think it's premature to guess who stays and who goes. Russell and Wideman could have great years or off years, so anythings possible at this point.

(Not even going into trades.)

Not that I'm overly concerned about injuries but hasn't he been injured 3 of the past 4 seasons with the once exception being the lock out year? If it happens again this year I think I will begin to be worried.

If they're gone and a goalie is our system doesn't step up then we'd have to fill that hole with another higher paid UFA or two.

Didn't say I was worried either just said it would ease up some cap space if Oritio stepped up this season. He's 24 now and is waiver eligible in the fall, yeah there's no rush but after flirting with it the past two years you'd expect him to be an NHL player this year.

Ortio is a RFA this summer but probably won't command the 3.5-4.5 Ramo or Hillier gets, so him making the jump would free up some cash next year. That's all I was saying.

Okay go take it up with Kypreos if you don't trust his sources. No reason to call him an idiot because gio signed a reasonable contract.

The comparison was Gio and Iginla fitness level and the fact that Iginla is still an effective player at the age Gio will end his deal at. Injuries are a completely different arguement.

Totally bad reading comprehension.

TSN also reported the same thing first, Kypreos about a week later.

I think fitness levels and injuries actually tie in pretty nicely together.

Either way, it's too bad it's not front loaded as it'd be nice to know he'd be much more tradeable if we're pushed up against the cap in a couple years. I just want to avoid a situation like Boston where cap issues forced them to trade their young studs (Seguin, Hamilton, Lucic) because there wasn't a huge market for a high-priced aging dman (Chara).
