Between drafting Sam Bennett, the Hamilton acquisition, assessing the team needs in free agency (Frolik), and now this Gio extension, Brad Treliving is quickly making a name for himself as one of the best executives in the league.

He is a leading candidate for GM of the year IMO

There is no doubt in my mind that, if Gio was on the open market, he could have gotten quite a bit more money than this deal.

Old one. This extension takes effect next year.

Since 2005, the CBA has forbidden any contract renegotiation.

Defensemen in same neighbourhood as Giordano $6.75M extension: Doughty $7M, Phaneuf $7M, Chara $6.916M, Pietrangelo $6.5M, Karlsson $6.5M

Seems about right.

I can't wait to compare our D to Mulletville's

Difference is, imagine what Doughty, Pietrangelo and Karlsson would be making if they re-signed today.

How so? He said the 9 million was the starting point of negotiations which is most likely true.

Amazing how some people can't grasp the concept of two parties negotiating

I was expecting 6yrs @ 7.5M, and was afraid of 6yrs @ 8M.

6yrs @ 6.75M is a very nice deal for this team.

That's the beauty of this contract. I don't think anyone will sign for more cap hit then the captain. I was hoping for between 6-6.5, was expecting 7.5-8. 6.75? Are you kidding me. Treliving you mother####ing wizard. I love you.

Brodie, Hamilton, Gio, all signed to team friendly cap hits that will ensure the Flames are contenders for a long time. What a D core. I'm no longer worried about JG, Monahan or Bennett's contracts. Not when we have an internal cap hit like this. And not when you have a god damn wizard running the show.

Beauty contract for a beauty player. This team is serious about winning and the captain just gave his full fledged support. I love you Gio , with all my heart and soul!

Was thinking the same thing, those players would be in the 8mil + you would think had they just signed today.

Good deal, Giordano turns 32 in a month and will be 38 when this new deal finishes (old 1 + new 6) so you're hoping he isn't chugging it up too much by the end of this contract.

Happy overall. Almost 7 million is a big pill to swallow for 6 years, for a guy his age but he was going to get paid by someone next summer if it wasn't us and this is a contract that will be very workable in our cap for the type of player and the role he plays for us. You hope injuries don't make him miss too much time.

Great off season for our GM, thought this contract was going to be around seven and a half.

Drew Doughty would be $10M+ I think. At the very least he'd get the Subban deal if he was an UFA.

It's not likely that Giordano will be worth that by the end of the contract, but it's certainly possible.

This was always going to be "too much money", "too much term" or "trading away the captain".

We got option 2. It's the biggest risk, but also has the best potential. I was never going to be happy, but I'm not complaining either. We'll see how it goes.

That's an acceptable deal... not sure I'll like paying 38 year old Mark Giordano that much scratch but I'm pretty sure I'll like paying 32 year old Mark Giordano that much.

When Brandon Hickey and Oliver Kylington are in the fold in two years, the whole thing is just going to look like one big delicious chocolate sundae. Personal guarantee!
